Box Score 2 BRYANT SOFTBALL RUNS INTO TOUGH BLACKBIRDS, DROP TWO ON THE ROAD
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University softball team dropped a pair at LIU Brooklyn Saturday afternoon, 12-4 and 8-7.
Game 1
The Bulldogs found themselves in a hole early on as five first-inning runs by LIU Brooklyn were too much for Bryant to overcome as the visitors dropped Game 1, 12-4.
The Bulldogs scored four-straight runs from the top of the third inning to the top of the fifth, cutting the Blackbird lead to just two runs, 6-4, but the hosts scored two more in the bottom of the fifth and four in the bottom of the sixth to clinch the win.
Junior Lauren Guy (La Habra, Calif.) blasted a solo shot in the top of the third, while freshman Mollie Anderson (East Greenwich, R.I.) and Madeline Velasquez (Los Angeles, Calif.) each picked up RBI singles in the top of the fourth.
Junior Amy Weinberg (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) led Bryant with a pair of hits while classmate Taylor Bell (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) picked up the lone double for the Bulldogs. Senior Brittany Hart (North Andover, Mass.) was dealt the loss, striking out two in 5.2 innings of work.
Game 2
Despite holding a 6-0 advantage after four full innings, the Bulldogs dropped Game 2, 8-7, after a huge comeback by the Blackbirds.
The Black and Gold got things started in the top of the first off a Velasquez solo homer to right center. In the top of the third, junior Aubrey Mable (Aurora, Colo.) extended the Bryant lead with a two-run homerun, to highlight a three-run third inning.
In the top of the fourth, freshman Elle Madsen (Wheat Ridge, Colo.) singled, scoring Guy, to put Bryant up 6-0 after four.
The Blackbirds exploded four three runs in the fifth, a run in the sixth and four in the bottom of the seventh to earn the 8-7 win. In the top of the 6th, Mable highlighted her fantastic day with her second homer to left center, but it wasn't enough for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs will look to bounce back on Sunday when they visit Fairleigh Dickinson for a doubleheader (12/2 p.m.)
