PITCHING TRIO SHINES, BRYANT COMPLETES SWEEP OF UML WITH TWO LATE RUNS

Box Score LOWELL, Mass. – Cole Schiff, Thomas Galusha and Justin Dressler limited UMass Lowell to just four hits and retired 18 of the final 20 batters as the Bryant baseball team completed a weekend sweep with a 4-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at LeLacheur Park.

Key Moment
  • Carlos Irizarry's shallow fly ball to center bounced out of the glove of the diving center fielder and Casey Wensley raced all the way around from first to score the go-ahead run in the eighth.
How it Happened
  • UML broke the ice on Sunday, scoring twice with two outs in the third. A single, wild pitch and stolen base put a runner at third with two outs and Scott Donahue was able to get enough of a 1-1 pitch to hit it off the wall in left field. The ball caromed back towards the infield allowing Donahue to reach third with a triple. Nick Solarzano's two-out single up the middle made it 2-0.
  • Bryant had a quick answer as Wensley singled to open the fourth and Garcia launched a two-run home run off the video board in left two batters later to tie the game at 2-2.
  • It remained 2-2 as Bryant's pitching staff retired 12-straight batters following the two-out hits in the third. The string was snapped with a two-out hit in the seventh but Dressler promptly picked the runner off. The only other runner to reach for UML came on an error to start the ninth.
  • Bryant finally broke the tie with a two-out rally in the top of the eighth. UML took Geisler after he retired the first two batters and Wensley greeted Jake LaFrancois with a two-out single on a 1-2 pitch. Irizarry then hit a fly ball to shallow center that fell out of the glove of a diving Ryan Strand in center. Wensley never stopped running and slid into home safely all the way from first.
  • The Black and Gold then added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. An infield error opened the inning and Cam Papetti contributed a key two-out double to keep the inning going. UML then intentionally walked Greger to load the bases to face Hackett but Hackett was able to work a full-count walk to bring in a run and make it 4-2.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, a throwing error put the lead runner at second with no outs. Dressler responded by retiring the next three batters to end the game.
