Wyers, Belcher, Klosterman win major awards: Nine take home All-America East honors

BOSTON -- Bryant baseball junior shortstop Drew Wyers was named the Len Harlow Player of the Year, freshman pitcher Michael Belcher was named America East Rookie of the Year and head coach Ryan Klosterman was named the America East Coach of the Year on Tuesday afternoon, the league announced..

It marks the second-straight year the Bulldogs have taken home player of the year and coach of the year honors, while Belcher becomes the program's first America East Rookie of the Year. The major awards highlight a postseason haul that includes nine all-conference selections and one all-academic honor. Wyers becomes the eighth player in DI program history to earn player of the year honors, while Belcher becomes the ninth rookie of the year in DI program history. Klosterman has now won America East Coach of the Year honors each of the last two seasons and has been named coach of the year for the third time in his career.   

Wyers and Belcher also appear on the All-America First Team and are joined by second baseman Zac Zyons. First baseman Gavin Noriega, outfielder Charlie Saul, third baseman Pat D'Amico and pitchers Kyle Rizy and Clay Robbins were named to the second team. Belcher, Saul and catcher Cam Papetti earned all-rookie honors and Brandyn Durand was named to the All-Academic Team.

Drew Wyers | Len Harlow America East Player of the Year, First Team All-America East Shorstop

  • Wyers became just the third player in DI program history (Ryan Ward - 2018 and Liam McGill - 2021) to finish the regular season with a batting average above .400. Wyers won the America East batting title with a .422 average in 40 games and hit an impressive .438 in league contests.
  • He finished the regular season with 54 hits and enters the postseason first in average, first in OBP (.526), first in slugging (.734), first in OPS (1.260), fourth in RBI (46), T-fifth in home runs (10) and second in HBP (15).
  • Wyers has reached safely in each of his last 32 games and has posted 17 multi-hit games, including three four-hit games.He's also been a rock defensively, posting a .954 fielding percentage.
  • Wyers is the first shorstop at Bryant to win conference player of the year honors and joins Kevin Brown (2013), Robby Rinn (2016), Mickey Gasper (2017), Ryan Ward (2018), Liam McGill (2021) and Matt Woods (2022) as Bulldogs who have won the award at the DI level.

Ryan Klosterman | America East Coach of the Year

  • Klosterman takes home coach of the year honors for the third time in the last five seasons after leading Bryant to its second-straight America East Regular Season title.
  • He joins Ron Gendron (7), Steve Owens (5), Jill Batcheller (4), Katie Cameron (3) and Barbara Cilli (3) as the only coaches in Bryant DI program history to win as many as three coach of the year honors.
  • The Bulldogs have won 33 games, notching the program's 12th 30-win season in 16 seasons as a Division I member. Bryant was just 11-14-1 at the end of March but has gone 22-3 over its last 25 games, winning the America East by four games.
  • The Bulldogs have won at home and on the road, entering the postseason with the nation's longest road winning streak at 12.
  • Statistically, Bryant ranks first in the league in doubles per game (2.22), ERA (4.77), home runs (69), scoring (7.3), slugging (.482), strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.03), strikeouts per nine (9.1) and WHIP (1.47). 
  • Klosterman enters the America East Tournament with a 156-114-2 (.577) overall record at Bryant. 

Michael Belcher | America East Rookie of the Year, First Team All-America East Starting Pitcher, America East All-Rookie Team

  • Belcher becomes the first true freshman to earn first team all-conference honors since Steve Theetge in 2016 and is the program's first rookie of the year since Ryan Ward in 2018.
  • Bryant's Saturday starter to begin the season, Belcher moved to Friday when the Bulldogs headed to Binghamton with a 2-4 record in league play. The Bulldogs have responded by winning each of his last six starts to turn the year around.
  • Belcher has posted a 2-0 record and a 3.62 ERA in 32.1 innings over those six starts, surrendering just 25 hits (.208 oppBA) and striking out 23.
  • On the year, Belcher ranks third in the league in ERA (4.09), third in oppBA (.235) and eighth in strikeouts (56).
  • Belcher joins Kevin Brown (2010), Kevin McAvoy (2012), AJ Zarozny (2013), Matt Albanese (2014), James Karinchak (2015), Nick Angelini (2016), Jimmy Titus (2017) and Ryan Ward (2018) as rookie of the year winners.

Zac Zyons | First Team All-America East Second Baseman

  • Zyons earns first team honors for the second-straight season after finishing seventh in the league in slugging (.587), 10th in OBP (.431), seventh in OPS (1.018), fifth in runs scored (45), sixth in RBI (42), eighth in doubles (14), third in home runs (11) and first in HBP (20).
  • Zyons provided power from the leadoff spot, posting a pair of two-homer games in league play to finish second in the league-only games with seven.
  • Defensively, he's proven to be one of the best in the region, posting a .984 fielding percentage. 

Clay Robbins | Second Team All-America East Starting Pitcher

  • A transfer from Division III Southern Maine, Robbins stepped into Bryant's weekend rotation this spring and has posted a 1-0 record and a 4.99 ERA in 48.2 innings.
  • He's allowed just 49 hits, walked 17 and struck out 47 on the year. Robbins pitched to a 4.94 ERA in league play, holding opponents to a .246 average.
  • While he didn't throw more than 5.0 innings in any start this year, Robbins did throw at least three innings in all 12 of his starts.
  • He allowed five runs in his first league start vs UAlbany but rebounded to allow three earned runs or less in six of his final seven starts.

Kyle Rizy | Second Team All-America East Relief Pitcher

  • Rizy has turned long relief into a league-leading seven victories this spring.
  • After missing most of 2023 and all of 2024 with Tommy John Surgery, Rizy has posted a 7-0 record and a 3.53 ERA in 14 appearances (35.2 innings). He has walked 18 and struck out 39 on the year.
  • In league play, Rizy is 5-0 with a 2.92 ERA, throwing at least three innings in seven of his eight relief outings. That includes 3.1 innings of one-run relief as Bryant started its turnaround with a victory over Binghamton on April 11.

Gavin Noriega | Second Team All-America East First Baseman

  • Noriega earns second team honors after moving from left field to first base this spring.
  • The 2024 America East Player of the Year, Noriega is hitting .323 with 16 doubles, eight home runs, 47 RBI (2nd in AE), 50 runs scored (3rd) and a .408 OBP.
  • He is three RBI away from back-to-back seasons with 50+ RBI and 50+ runs scored and has posted a league-leading nine doubles in conference play.
  • Noriega joins Brandon Bingel (3B and DH) and Kevin Brown (OF and DH) as the only players in DI program history to earn all-conference honors at multiple positions.

Pat D'Amico | Second Team All-America East Third Baseman

  • D'Amico picks up secod team honors after hitting .298 with seven doubles, six home runs and 27 RBI in league play.
  • He posted a 1.031 OPS and ranked fifth in the league in RBI while securing the hot corner.
  • D'Amico has made just two errors at third base in conference play and owns a .961 fielding percentage split between first and third base.
  • He enters the postseason having set career highs in home runs (8), RBI (39), runs scored (29) and walks (22). 

Charlie Saul | Second Team All-America East, America East All-Rookie Team

  • Saul picks up second team and all-rookie honors after filling a big hole in right field after the Bulldogs lost both starters from a year ago.
  • He finished the regular season hitting .278 with six doubles, four triples, five home runs, 30 RBI and 29 runs scored.
  • Saul's selection was likely secured with his performance down the stretch. The right fielder from River Vale, N.J., hit .350 (14-for-40) with four triples, two home runs and a team-leading 15 RBI in 10 games in May.
  • Saul hit .348 with four doubles, four triples, three home runs and 22 RBI in league play, finishing with a 1.052 OPS.

Cam Papetti | America East All-Rookie Team

  • Like Saul, Papetti's selection the all-rookie team was all but secured thanks to a torrid stretch in May.
  • The true freshman from Grafton, Mass., is 7-for-21 with seven home runs, 12 RBI, eight runs scored and a .448 OBP in seven games.
  • Each of Papetti's last seven hits have been home runs, including a pair of multi-homer games in the final regular season series at UMBC.
  • Papetti finished the regular season hitting .298 (14-47) with seven home runs, 15 RBI and a 1.162 OPS in league play.
  • Papetti's eight home runs are tied with Jimmy Titus for the most by a true freshman in DI program history.

Brandyn Durand | America East All-Academic Team

  • Durand earns an all-academic nod as a 3.71 student in Bryant's Exercise and Movement Science major. 
  • On the field, Durand enters the postseason hitting .288 (53-184) with 10 doubles, 10 home runs, 41 RBI and 40 runs scored.
  • Durand is the first player in DI program history to hit 10+ home runs in back-to-back seasons.

Bryant will serve as the No. 1 seed in this week's Northeast Delta Dental America East Baseball Championship hosted at Mahaney Diamond on the campus of the University of Maine.
