SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University baseball team opens the 2023 season this weekend with a three-game series at High Point.

Opening Day of college baseball is set for Friday, February 17 and the Bulldogs and Panthers will kick off the season at 4:00 p.m. The series continues on Saturday (2:00 p.m.) and concludes on Sunday (1:00 p.m.).

• Picard is set to make his first career start on Opening Day. The righty has pitched exclusively out of the bullpen during his career, making 16 relief appearances last spring. 
• Turner steps into the weekend rotation for the first time as well. The big righty made four midweek starts for the Black and Gold last spring. 
• Frasier returns to his Sunday role after going 5-3 in 14 appearances (13 starts) last year. He struck out 58 in 58.2 innings.  

Bryant vs. High Point

• Bryant and High Point are meeting on the opening weekend of the season for the second time in three years.
• The Bulldogs won 2-of-3 against the Panthers in 2021. Bryant won the first game, 2-0, and game two, 7-6.    

Bulldog Notes and Notables

• Bryant is coming off a season in which it finished 30-27 overall and advanced to the championship round of the NEC Tournament for the seventh time. 
• The Bulldogs start a new era this season, however, as they join the America East. 
• Bryant must replace several key offensive pieces from last year's squad but the return of Jake Gustin, Derek Smith, Carmine Petosa and Jackson Phinney lays a solid foundation.
• Gustin is a two-time all-conference selection, while Smith has 50+ hits in each of his two full seasons. Petosa and Phinney combined for 14 home runs a season ago.
• The Black and Gold also welcome back nearly 70 percent of their innings from last year, including Liam LeVangie, Brett Wichrowski, Jared Burrows, Jackson Vanesko, Coleman Picard, Kyle Rizy, Austin Wainer and M.T. Morrissey. All eight threw 16.0+ innings last spring.
