Box Score
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University softball team fell to the University of Connecticut, 10-2, Tuesday afternoon at Conaty Park.
UConn (12-31) starter Katelyn Callahan allowed only two runs on four hits in five innings of work as she stymied the Bulldogs (25-18) lineup from top to bottom.
The Huskies wasted little time getting on the board as three-straight base hits set the visitors up for a three-run first inning. UConn added four more in the top of the third thanks to a two-run double from Val Sadowl, upping the Huskies edge to seven runs, 7-0 after three.
Bryant showed some signs of life in the bottom of the fifth when junior center fielder Madeline Velasquez (Los Angeles, Calif.) drove in sophomore second baseman Liana Ogata (Tustin, Calif.) to put Bryant on the board. One batter later, sophomore Elle Madsen (Wheat Ridge, Colo.) drove in Velasquez with a double of her own, bring the Bulldogs within five, 7-2.
However the late push was not enough as UConn tacked on three more in the top of the seventh, eventually winning, 10-2.
Bryant starter Katelin Saunders (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) allowed seven runs on nine hits in 2.2 innings, while sophomore Hayley Bottino (Canyon Country, Calif.) was solid in relief, giving up two earned runs (three total) on four hits in 4.1 innings out of the bullpen.
Velasquez was the only Bulldogs with more than one hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored as the Black and Gold hit the ball hard but just couldn't find a hole.
Bryant will look to bounce back over the weekend when they wrap up Northeast Conference action with a doubleheader vs. Mount St. Mary's, Saturday at Conaty Park (1/3 p.m.).
