Softball splits Sunday at Chanticleer Challenge

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University softball team picked up its second win of the 2014 season, topping Appalachian St., 6-0, before falling to Eastern Illinois, 1-0, on Day 2 of the Chanticleer Classic in Conway, S.C.

Game 1

Behind a seven inning shutout from sophomore right hander Elle Madsen (Wheat Ridge, Colo.), the Bulldogs (2-7) avenged an earlier loss to Appalachian St. topping the Mountaineers, 6-0, Sunday in the first of two games on Sunday for the Bulldogs.

After a scoreless first inning, Bryant got things going in the top of the second when senior shortstop Aubrey Mable (Aurora, Colo.) and classmate Taylor Bell (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) each reached base to set up a Haylee Haas (Moorpark, Calif.) two-run triple to put the Black and Gold up, 2-0, after two.

Bryant added run in the top of the fourth on a Taylor Burger (Killingworth, Conn.) double and in the top of the fifth on a Madeline Velasquez (Los Angeles, Calif.) single to push the edge 4-0. In the top of the 7th, Haas capped off her terrific day with a leadoff homerun just before Kendall Corder (Carmichael, Calif.) singled home Liana Ogata (Tustin, Calif.) to grant the Bulldogs the 6-0 victory. Madsen, who improves to 2-3 on the year, allowed just five hits in seven innings.

Game 2

In the second leg of Sunday's doubleheader, offense was hard to come by as the Black and Gold dropped a nail biter to a very good Eastern Illinois team, 1-0.

Sophomore Katelin Saunders (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) threw arguably her best game of the season to date, allowing just one run on six hits to along with a pair of strikeouts. The lone mistake of the afternoon for Saunders came in the bottom of the second inning when outfielder April Markowski blasted a solo homer to left center for the only run of the contest.

Bryant mustered just three hits in the game with its best scoring opportunity coming in the top of the 4th inning when it had the bases loaded with one out but was unable to capitalize.

Sophomore Hayley Bottino (Canyon Country, Calif.), Burger and Madsen accounted for the three Bryant hits on the afternoon.

The Bulldogs wrap up action at the Chanticleer Challenge Monday morning (10 a.m.) when they face off with Furman.
