Bulldogs fall to Eagles, 6-3, Thursday in Smithfield

Box Score

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – A pair of three-run homeruns by Boston College's Tatiana Cortez proved to be the difference in the Bryant University softball team's 6-3 loss to the Eagles, Thursday afternoon at Conaty Park.

Cortez sent three-run slams over the left-centerfield fence in the bottom of the second and fifth innings to provide all the scoring BC and starter Nicole D'Argento needed to improve to 15-10 overall in 2014 season.

Sophomore second baseman Liana Ogata (Tustin, Calif.) put on a terrific showing at the dish for the Bulldogs (10-12), going 3-for-3, including a two-run single to right field in the top of the fourth inning. Classmate Elle Madsen (Wheat Ridge, Colo.) extended her team-leading hit streak to 10 games, blasting a solo shot to left field in the top of the sixth, her seventh of the year.

However it was not enough as the Black and Gold were unable to string multiple hits together, leaving a total of six runners on base. Bryant starter Katelin Saunders (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) allowed six runs on eight hits and five walks in six innings of work, falling to 3-6 on the year.

"Today's game gives us a clear definition of things we need to work on as a team," said Bryant head coach Shayne Lotito. "We still need to work out some kinks and find consistency in our level of play.

"Strong showings by Liana and Ellie are great to see and show a lot of promise, but we need to be more consistent as a whole to have success in the future."

Looking ahead, the Bulldogs will open Northeast Conference action with an afternoon doubleheader at Fairfield Dickinson, Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m.
