Madsen homers twice despite losses at Mid-Major Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Despite a pair of homeruns from sophomore pitcher Elle Madsen (Wheat Ridge, Colo.), the Bryant University softball team dropped a pair on Day 2 of the UTSA Mid-Major Classic, falling to Neb.-Omaha, 14-5, before dropping a tough 8-5 decision to UTSA, Saturday afternoon.

Game 1

After allowing the Mavs to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the Bulldogs responded in next half inning with three runs of their own behind an Amy Weinberg (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) RBI single to right field and a pinch-hit Taylor Burger (Killingworth, Conn.) two-run knock to center.

The Mavs answered with three more runs in the bottom of the second, however Bryant once again responded in the form of an Aubrey Mable (Aurora, Colo.) two-run shot to center field, granting the Black and Gold the brief, 5-4, advantage.

Neb.-Omaha tied it up in the bottom of the third, before exploding for nine runs in the fourth inning to clinch the 14-5 victory. Sophomore Katelin Saunders (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) was handed her second loss of the year despite a trio of Ks.

Game 2

In a rematch against host UTSA, the Bulldogs again found themselves in in the driver's seat up 3-2 after three in a half innings, but another big run from the Roadrunners sealed an eventual 8-5 victory.

After a pair of solo shots from UTSA in the first and third, respectively, Madsen launched her first homer of the contest to left field to cut the deficit in the half in the top of the fourth. Later that inning, senior Taylor Bell (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) ripped a two-run single down the right field line to Bryant on top, 3-2, midway through the fourth. However, the Roadrunners answered with six runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to go back on top, 8-3, after four.

Madsen added her second long ball of the day in the top of fifth, sending a two-run shot to left field to bring the Bulldogs within three, but it was not enough as Bryant dropped Game 2, 8-5.

Madsen threw all six innings for the Black and Gold, allowing eight runs on eight hits, dropping to 0-2 on the year.

Bryant will wrap up the Mid-Major Classic on Sunday when they get another crack at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 10 a.m. EST.
