Women's hoops takes down PC, 90-80, behind Bailey's 35

Box Score

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Senior point guard Jenniqua Bailey's (Bloomfield, Conn.) career-best 35 points helped the Bryant University women's basketball team take down Providence College, 90-80, Sunday afternoon at the Chace Athletic Center.

The Bulldogs (5-1) shot a season-high 52 percent from the field, including 8-for-16 from deep to win their second-straight this year and first-ever against the Friars (1-5).

Jenniqua Bailey was tremendous in perhaps the best performance of her career, putting up a career-high 35 points on 11-of-14 shooting to go along with eight assists, five rebounds and two steals. Junior guard Tiersa Winder (Baltimore, Md.) was also spectacular posting a career-high of her own with 20 points and nine rebounds.

Junior forward Breanna Rucker (Cincinnati, Ohio) continued her stellar play with her fifth-straight double double registering 17 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Ivory Bailey (Wyomissing, Pa.), sophomore Morgan Olander (Mansfield, Conn.), and senior Melissa Corraro (Shelton, Conn.) each chipped in six points apiece, also.

Tori Rule led the Friars with 20 points in just 32 minutes, while Sarah Beal and Evi Iiskola put up 13 and 11, respectively.

After back-to-back 3s from Rucker and a layup from Jenniqua Bailey, the Bulldogs built their largest lead of the half, 23-17, but a 6-0 Friar run brought the two foes even, 23-23, with 10 minutes to play until halftime. Bryant pushed the margin to 12 points, 45-33, with just under three minutes on the clock as PC did not have an answer for Rucker, Winder, or Jenniqua Bailey who finished the half with a combined 41 points on 14-of-23 shooting.

By the end of the first 20 minutes of play, the Bulldogs held a 52-39 lead after shooting 55 percent from the field, both season highs for a single half.

Bryant opened the second half right where they left of the first, holding a 60-48 advantage at the under-16 media break. The Black and Gold continued to thwart every PC attack, maintaining a double-digit margin through the 11-minute mark until a 6-0 run by the Friars brought the visitors with six, 68-62, with just over nine minutes left on the clock.

But just as they'd done all afternoon, the Bulldogs answered the call with six-straight of their own, upping the lead to 12 points, 74-62, at the under-eight media break. Bryant maintained its lead through the final buzzer behind the leadership and stellar play of Jenniqua Bailey for its second-straight victory, 90-80.

Looking ahead, Bryant will look to keep the ball rolling when it hosts Holy Cross on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the first leg of a Bulldog doubleheader.
