HOYAS TOP BULLDOGS, 6-1,
SATURDAY IN GEORGETOWN INVITATIONAL
Boxscore
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Senior Elise Boissoneau
(Ashburnham, Mass.) scored the first goal of the 2010
season for the Bryant University field hockey team in the 69th
minute Saturday against host Georgetown University, but it wouldn't
be enough to get the Bulldogs the win, falling 6-1 in the final
game of the Georgetown Invitational.
Boissoneau's goal, which came unassisted off her own rebound,
got past Hoya goalie Briana Pereira at the 68:02 mark, but already
facing a six-goal deficit, Bryant (0-2) couldn't claw out of the
hole to get its first win of the year.
Catherine Shugrue scored a hat trick for the home side, two of
her goals coming in the opening frame, and chipped in an assist on
the day.
Shugrue broke a scoreless draw with her first goal 26:11 into
the contest, less than a minute before Georgetown (1-0) scored the
first of back-to-back tallies off penalty corners to take a 3-0
lead at the half.
Annie Wilson then started second-half scoring with a pair of
goals of her own before Shugrue tallied the Hoyas' final goal of
the game for a 6-0 advantage with 6:53 left to play.
Boissoneau's goal closed the gap to 6-1 with under two minutes
on the clock, as the Bulldogs fired seven shots, four of them on
goal, in the game. Shugrue and Wilson each recorded five of
Georgetown's 14 total shots, and seven players recorded at least
one point for the hosts.
Junior goalie Jennifer Gullotti
(Waltham, Mass.) made seven stops in the Bulldogs' second
game in as many days, while her Georgetown counterpart collected a
trio of saves. Bryant was awarded nine penalty corners to the
Hoyas' seven, but could not convert.
Bryant will get a few days off before hitting the road again on
Sept. 3, when the Bulldogs travel to the University of New
Hampshire for a 7 p.m. matchup. The Black and Gold play their first
11 contests away from the friendly confines of the Turf Complex and
don't return to Smithfield for their home opener until Oct. 6
against Holy Cross.
