SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- Bryant University senior
Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) lined a one-out
double down the left field line in the bottom of the sixth inning
as part of a three-run inning to help lead the Bulldogs to a 3-1
win over Fairleigh Dickinson in the first game of Saturday's
Northeast Conference doubleheader.
For Campbell, the double marked the 300th hit of his career,
becoming the first player in school history to reach the 300-hit
milestone.
Bryant would win the nightcap 6-3 to improve to 18-18 overall on
the year and 10-5 in the Northeast Conference. Fairleigh
Dickinson drops to 9-25 (4-10). The Bulldogs will go for the series
sweep Sunday with a new start time of 11 a.m. due to expected rain
in the forecast.
In the opener, Bryant senior Eric Polvani (Wallingford,
Conn.) and Fairleigh Dickinson's Mike Eliasen locked
into a pitcher's duel up until the sixth inning when the
Bulldogs plated three runs. Polvani allowed a leadoff single
to Matt Holsman but retired the next 13 batters in-a-row before
Ryan Kresky broke the string with a single to right in the fifth.
Polvani allowed just five hits in six innings while striking out
five and walking just one to improve to 3-5 on the season. Eliasen
was just as strong on the mound for FDU, allowing a leadoff double
to Kevin Brown (Northborough, Mass.) in the first
inning, allowing just a walk to Tim Norton (Barnstable,
Mass.) in the third and taking a one-hitter into the
sixth. But in the sixth, Norton started the rally with a
single up the middle. After a walk to Colin
Dougherty (Lowell, Mass.), the two runners moved
up a base as the result of a balk by Eliasen .
With the infield playing in, Brown would ground out to second
base for the first out, but Jordan English (Windsor Locks,
Conn.) came through in the clutch, lining a single to left
to score Norton from third.
After an intentional walk to Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor,
Conn.), Campbell made it 2-0 with his milestone 300th hit
that also happened to be the 53rd career double.
Mark Andrews (Hillsborough, N.J.) came on to
pitch in the seventh to pick up his seventh save of the
season.
In the second game on the day, freshman Zakary Cianciolo
(Prospect, Conn.) had a big day at the plate. The
shortstop went 3-for-3 with a single, a double, and triple to
finish just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle as the Bulldogs
rallied back from a 2-0 deficit to win 6-3.
Trailing 3-1 in the fourth, Cianciolo tripled to deep center to
score Dylan Stone (Portsmouth, R.I.) who led off
the inning with a single. Norton would get Cianciolo home
with a single to right to tie the game at 3-3.
In the fifth inning, the Bulldogs took its first lead of the
game as thanks to an RBI double by Cianciolo. Starter
Peter Kelich (Jackson, N.J.) picked up his sixth
win (6-1) while Andrews picked up his eighth save of the
season getting the final two outs in the seventh.
Campbell singled in the second inning to stretch his hit streak
to nine games.
