OVER MOUNT ST. MARY'S
BOX SCORE
EMMITSBURG, Md. – With the Bulldogs leading 4-0 in
the top of the ninth in Friday's opener at Mount St. Mary's, rain
forced the game to be suspended until Sunday. Finally, after
waiting a full day before resuming play, the Bulldogs and The Mount
closed out the game with the Bulldogs coming out on top 6-0.
The Bulldogs scored four runs in the eighth and were just about
to come to bat in the top of the ninth before the game was
called. Resuming play Sunday and looking to gain some
momentum heading into Sunday's series finale after dropping two
Saturday, the Bulldogs got a two-run RBI double by Kevin
Brown in the ninth and Mark Andrews
struck out two in the bottom of the ninth to close things
out. Brown finished 4-for-5 in the game.
The game featured a pitcher's duel between Brent
Almeida and MSM's Vincent Molesky. Almeida managed
to get out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the first but was
able to get Andrew Caron to pop up second for the final out.
The Bulldogs finally broke through with four runs in the top of
the eighth. Held to just two hits through the first seven
innings, the Bulldogs used four hits and a costly error to get on
the scoreboard as Jamie Skagerlind got things
started by reaching on an error by the rightfielder with one out in
the inning. Skagerlind was able to advance to second base on
the play. One batter later, Norton lined a double into the
gap in right to score Skagerlind and give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
After David Soltis drew a walk against starter
Vincent Molesky, Brown laced a triple down the
right field line on the very first pitch he saw from reliever Mike
Matta to score both Soltis and Norton.
Brown would come on a sacrifice bunt by Jordan
English to make it 4-0. The Bulldogs threatened to
push across a few more runs after singles by Jeff
Vigurs and Nick Campbell, but Matta was
able to escape further damage by getting Dylan
Stone to fly out to left to end the inning.
Nick Laude pitched well in relief of Almeida who was also strong
in keeping the Mount scoreless through 6 1/3. With the lead,
Laude got Shane Eyler to pop out to Cianciolo at shortstop before
turning things over to closer Andrews. Andrews proceeded to
get the next two batters out on groundouts.
