BU BLANKS BULLDOGS 4-0 ON
THE DIAMOND WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant
University softball team hung with a tough Boston University team
Wednesday afternoon, but fell short as the Terriers went on to
defeat the Bulldogs by a margin of 4-0 at the BU Softball Complex.
The high-powered Terrier (21-14) offense was quiet for the most
part but managed to plate four runs as they dropped the Bulldogs to
0-6 on the road.
Sophomore Laura Bowen (Hudson, Mass.) and the
Bulldogs (4-28) started Wednesday's game with a bang as the
middle infielder singled to shortstop in the first at bat of the
game. Bowen moved over to second on an illegal pitch by BU starter,
Taylor Cowan, and advanced to third on a Kate Murray
(Fitchburg, Mass.) sacrifice bunt.
In the next at bat, senior captain Ashley Coon
(Levittown, Pa.) grounded to the shortstop, which caught
Bowen in a rundown between third and home. The Terriers were able
to nab Bowen as Coon moved over to second. Freshman Talia
Zizza (Reading, Mass.) grounded out to the shortstop to
end the top of the first frame for the Bulldogs.
With the help of a wild pitch and one passed ball, the Terriers
got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. BU led
off the inning with back-to-back singles, before having two
straight batters retired. With two runners in scoring position, a
passed ball scored one Terrier to plate the first run of the game
and take a 1-0 lead early on. The Bulldogs made the final out of
the second at the plate as junior Sami Houseal (Mount Joy,
Pa.) flipped the ball to Coon who applied the tag on
BU's Cowan in time.
Boston struck again in the bottom of the fourth inning with two
runs on four hits, including a single and run from the designated
hitter Whitney Tuthill. They were Tuthill's second run and
hit of the game as BU took a 3-0 lead into the top of the fifth
inning.
BU's star April Setterlund extended the Terriers lead to
4-0 in the bottom of the fifth as she reached base with a triple
down the right field line. Sophomore Emily Roesch doubled in the
next Terrier at bat to score Setterlund and earn her seventh RBI of
the season. Setterlund was 1-2 in the game.
Following the double, freshman Brittany Hart (North
Andover, Mass.) came in for Houseal in relief and retired
two of the next three batters to get out of the inning.
The Bulldogs threatened in the top of the sixth as Coon led off
the inning with her second walk of the game. Following two
consecutive outs, freshman Christina Eringis (Tewksbury,
Mass.) and sophomore Lauren McCart (Voorhees,
N.J.) both singled to load the bases, but a
Lindsay Martin (Methuen, Mass.) pop out to the
shortstop ended the threat for the Black and Gold.
Coon and Bowen each hit singles in the top of the seventh but
were unable to make it around to score as the Bulldogs fell 4-0 at
the BU Softball Complex. Bowen had two of Bryant's seven
hits, going 2-4 from the plate while Coon went 1-2 with two walks.
The Terriers outhit the Bulldogs 10-7 in the contest as Cowan
pitched a complete-game shutout for BU. The freshman picked up the
first win of her career and stranded 10 Bulldogs on base in the
process.
Houseal took the loss for Bryant, falling to 0-13 on the season.
Hart pitched 1.2 innings in relief, allowing just one hit.
The Black and Gold return to Northeast Conference play this
weekend when they make the long road trip to western Pennsylvania
to take on Robert Morris and Saint Francis (Pa.). Bryant opens
against the Colonials with a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch is
slated for 12 p.m.
