WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -- Junior right fielder Jordan
English (Windsor Locks, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI
and junior right hander John Michael Ryan (Worcester,
Mass.) allowed just one hit in four innings of relief to
lead the Bryant University baseball team to a 7-6 win over Monmouth
University Sunday afternoon.
The win gives the Bulldogs a weekend split of their Northeast
Conference series with the Hawks as Bryant improves to 5-13 overall
(2-2 NEC) on the year. Monmouth drops to 6-9 (2-2 NEC).
Starter Peter Kelich (Jackson, N.J.) went five
innings allowing five runs while striking out five to earn his
third win (3-0) of the season
The Bulldogs trailed 5-3 heading into the top of the sixth
inning before erupting for four runs in the inning. Monmouth left
handed reliever Nick Vallillo walked the first three Bryant batters
to load the bases to start the inning. With Matt Goitz on to
pitch for Vallillo, Bryant pinch hitter Zakary Cianciolo
(Prospect, Conn.) came through with the big hit as the
junior drilled a single up the middle to score a pair of runs to
tie the game at 5-5.
Cianciolo would advance to third on a wild pitch and scored when
English singled to the left side. English would later come
home when Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor, Conn.)
reached on an infield error.
The seven runs would be just enough for Ryan who was solid for
the Bulldogs on the mound, allowing just one run in the eighth
after giving up a leadoff hit to pinch hitter Tim
McEndy. Ryan struck out four of the 15 batters he faced
and walked just two to earn his first save of the season.
Senior Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) had a hit
in the game to give him 279 for his career while senior
Dylan Stone (Portsmouth, R.I.) saw his nine-game
hitting streak, the longest of the season, come to an end.
Bryant will travel to Marist Tuesday for a non-conference game
at 3:30 p.m.
