SMITHFIELD, R.I - The Bryant University softball team split a
doubleheader with Brown on Thursday afternoon, winning game one,
11-3, before losing game two, 13-7. The 11 runs in game one were
the most for the Bulldogs this season, as they combined for 18 runs
on 24 hits in the two contests.
Game 1
Freshman Lauren McCart (Vorhees, N.J.)
and sophomore Regina Burdo (Wayne, Pa.) were the
catalysts for the Bryant offense in game one. McCart recorded her
first four-hit game of her career while driving in two runs, and
Burdo drove in a season-best four RBI to help Bryant to the 11-run
onslaught.
The Bulldogs started the scoring in the bottom of the third,
exploding for five runs on five hits in the frame to go up 5-0.
Ali Chouinard (Swansea, Mass.) led things off with
her second home run of the season, blasting the offering from
Michelle Moses over the fence in left center field to give Bryant a
1-0 lead. Chouinard went three-for-seven with three RBI in the two
games.
The team continued the rally, as Lindsay Martin
(Methuen, Mass.) tripled followed by an Ashley
Coon (Levittown, Pa.) double to drive in the run. Coon was
two-for-four with a pair of doubles in the contest. McCart came up
later in the inning, singling in Anne Dobmeier (Buffalo,
N.Y.) and Coon to go up 4-0. Dobmeier also had two hits,
as she was one of five Bulldogs to have a multi-hit game in game
one. McCart would come around the score the fifth and final run of
the frame, sliding in at home on an attempt to catch Laura
Bowen (Hudson, Mass.) stealing second.
Samantha Houseal (Mount Joy, Pa.) would record
her ninth win of the year on the hill, allowing three runs on five
hits in six innings while striking out two. All three runs against
the sophomore came in the top of the fifth, with Kelsey Wilson
getting the big hit with a two-run double that cut the Bulldog lead
to 5-3.
Burdo helped Bryant get those runs back in the fifth, hitting an
RBI single to score McCart with the first of two Bulldog runs in
the inning, as the home team grabbed a 7-3 lead.
With the bases loaded and two-down in the bottom of the sixth,
Burdo once again came up clutch, crushing a double off the fence in
center field, bringing in three runs to score on the play to put
Bryant up 10-3. Chouinard followed with a double of her own,
blooping a ball down the line in right to score Burdo with the run
that would end the game as the Bulldogs won, 11-3 on the eight-run
mercy rule.
Game 2
The Bears jumped out to an early lead in game two, scoring
three runs in the first and five in the second off of Bryant
starter Stephanie Barrett (Plaistow, N.H.) to take
an 8-0 lead going into the bottom of the second. Kelsey Wilson hit
a two run homer in the first and Katie Rothamel added on a two run
triple in the second to help the Brown offense. Wilson finished
with three hits and three RBI in the game to help the Bears to the
13-7 win and a split of the twin bill.
The Bulldogs mounted a comeback in the bottom of the second,
plating four runs to cut the lead in half, trailing 8-4. McCart
started the rally after singling and eventually coming in to score
on a wildo pitch. Burdo followed by roping a double down the line
in left field, scoring Kim Breton (Leominster,
Mass.) and Bowen. Burdo was one for three in the second
game with two RBI, finishing the day with six RBI in the two
contests. Chouinard finished the scoring with an RBI ground out to
bring in Burdo.
Another run in the third brought Bryant within three at 8-5, as
Bowen singled to right to score Stephanie Mirando (North
Haven, Conn.). Mirando continues to swing a hot bat, going
one-for-four in both contests to extend her hitting streak to
six-straight.
Houseal was brought on in the third inning to pitch for Bryant.
The sophomore got the Bears down in order in the third, but Brown
was able to score two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to
take a 13-5 lead. The runs in the fourth came on a wild pitch and a
two-out single by Trish Melvin that was just out of the reach of a
diving Chouinard.
Kate Strobel hit a two-out double to center that scored two runs
as part of the Brown three-run rally in the fifth that finished off
the scoring for the visitors.
Dobmeier then put on a show for the Bulldogs, blasting solo home
runs in her next two at-bats. The first came with two down in the
bottom of the fifth, lacing a pitch that just cleared the fence in
right field. The next came with two-outs once again, this time in
the seventh inning as she blasted one over the fence in left center
to put the score at 13-7. She finished with three hits in the
second came while driving in two.
The Bulldogs are now 4-4 in their last eight games with the
split, and won their first game against an Ivy League opponent.
Bryant will hit the road this weekend for a pair of games against
Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday (12 p.m.).
