CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. - Boston College scored nine times in the first two innings to put the Bulldogs in an early hole that they could not climb out of, as the Bryant baseball team fell, 16-8, on a wet and rainy day in Chestnut Hill on Tuesday. The Eagles, who entered the week ranked first in New England, were able to even the season series at one game apiece after falling to Bryant, 8-5, earlier this season in Smithfield.

The Eagles (25-15) got a big boost from Andrew Lawrence and Mickey Wiswall who combined to go eight-for-ten with five home runs and 13 RBI. Wiswall started everything in the first inning, as the Eagle clean-up hitter hit his first of three home runs in the game by driving a grand slam over the fence in right center field off of Bryant starter Chris Foundas (Needham, Mass.), putting Boston College up 4-0 in the first. Wiswall homered again in the fifth, this one a solo shot, and then smacked a two-run bomb in the eighth. He finished with three long balls and seven RBI. Foundas, who got the win in the first meeting between the two teams, was taken out after one inning of work.

The highlight of the game for Bryant came from junior center fielder Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) who picked up two hits in the contest, moving him into third place on the Bryant all-time hit list with 235. Campbell needs 13 more hits to break Jason Elridge's record of 247.

Bryant (26-15) got two back in the top of the second to cut the deficit down to 4-2. The

Bulldogs once again did it with two outs, as Jordan English (Windsor Locks, Conn.) walked to start the rally with Jamie Skagerlind (Holden, Mass.) following with a single. After both runners advanced on a passed ball, Tim Norton (Barnstable, Mass.) hit a ball out in front of the plate that was thrown away by catcher Tony Sanchez, allowing English and Skagerlind to score Bryant's first two runs.

Boston College responded with five more runs in the bottom of the second to extend its lead to seven at 9-2. This time it was Lawrence who got things going, hitting his first of two three-run home runs as part of the rally. Lawrence did it again in the bottom of the fifth as part of a four-run inning, pushing the BC lead to 14-3 after five.  He finished the game four-for-five at the plate with six RBI, as first four hitters in the Eagle line-up combined for a 14-for-18 performance.

Bryant began to climb back in the top of the sixth, as English hit a one-out single with runners on first and third that plated Pat O'Connor (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and score the Bulldogs' fourth run. O'Connor was two-for-five in the game with two runs scored while English came up big with two hits and three RBI.

A two-out, two-run bases loaded double down the line in right by English brought the Bulldogs back even more, as Bryant tallied four times in the seventh to cut the Eagle lead to 14-8. Campbell also brought in a run in the inning with a sacrifice fly, while Connor Carignan (Norwich, Conn.) came around to score after BC center fielder Robbie Anston mishandled a single by Dylan Stone (Portsmouth, R.I.).

Wiswall tacked on two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning with his third home run of the game, this one off of reliever Scott Merritt (Norwalk, Conn.) to put the score at 16-8. Merritt did a solid job out of the bullpen, allowing two runs on three hits in three innings of work, while Nick Laude (Wells, Maine) got the team out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the eighth, getting a fly out and a strike out to prevent any further damage.

The Bulldogs are now 7-2 against New England opponents, as they get set to play old Northeast-10 Conference foe, Stonehill, on Wednesday afternoon at the Bryant Baseball Complex (3:30 p.m.). The Bulldogs will be looking to snap their five-game losing streak.

Notes:

  • Pat McKenna had his 20-game hitting streak snapped, going 0-for-3 with an RBI in the contest. The streak was the longest for any Bulldog this season.
  • Bryant is now 7-2 against New England opponents, beating each team New England team they have played at-least once, including a win over BC earlier in the year.
  • Pat O'Connor pushed his hitting streak to 14-straight games, picking up two-hits in the game.
