KISSIMMEE, FLA. - The Bryant University softball team fell in a
pair of games on Sunday as they opened up play at the Rebel games
with a 6-3 loss to South Dakota and a 6-0 loss to Yale.
In the first game of the day, Bryant (1-11) struck first, as
Anne Dobmeier (Buffalo, N.Y.) swiped home plate to
take a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Dobmeier reached on a single
and was sacrificed over to second before stealing both third and
home.
After South Dakota responded with two runs in the top of the
third to take the lead, the Bulldogs scored solo runs in the fourth
and fifth innings to reclaim a 3-2 edge. Kate Thomas
(Bedford, N.H.) hit a solo homerun to dead center field to
tie the game leading off the bottom of the fourth, while
Ashley Coon (Levittown, Pa.) hit a sacrifice fly
in the fifth that plated Regino Burdo (Wayne,
Pa.), giving Bryant the advantage.
A double down the left field line by Alaina Novotny in the top
of the sixth drove in two runs for the Coyotes to take a lead that
they would not relinquish. Novotny would eventually come around to
score on a Bryant error to provide an insurance run, putting the
score at 5-3. South Dakota added another run in the seventh on a
single up the middle to put the game away.
Cortney Heim went the distance on the mound for the Coyotes,
allowing two earned runs and striking out nine. Samantha
Houseal (Mount Joy, Pa.) also went seven innings for the
Bulldogs, giving up just three earned runs.
In game two, the Bryant was held to just two hits, as Deanna
DiBernardi and Kayla Kuretich combined for the, 6-0, shutout for
Yale. Coon and Lauren McCart (Vorhees, N.J.) had
the only two hits for the black and gold, but the Bulldogs managed
to put just seven runners on base in the contest.
The best chance to score for Bryant came in the top of the first
inning, as they put two on with no one out, but DiBernardi was able
to work out of the jam. Only two runners reached scoring position
for the Bulldogs after the first inning.
Yale put one on the board in the second on a homerun from Megan
Enyeart over the center field fence. Enyeart was one of three Yale
players to collect three hits, as she was three-for-three with two
RBI.
Three more runs in the bottom of the third and two in the sixth
rounded out the scoring. Lauren Huddleston drove in a run in the
third, as she was three-for-four in the game while Katie Yanigasawa
also had three hits while crossing the plate twice. Enyeart,
Huddleston and Yanigasawa combined to go 9-for-11 with three RBI
and five runs scored.
Freshman Stephanie Barrett (Plaistow, N.H.)
started on the mound for the black and gold, going six innings
while allowing three earned runs and striking out two.
Bryant plays two more games Monday morning, as they take on IPFW
and Valparaiso (9 a.m. and 11 a.m.).
