SUNDAY, 7-6 AND 5-4
Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Bryant
softball team fell in a pair of close contests at Wagner on Sunday,
losing to their future Northeast Conference foes, 7-6 and 5-4, in a
road doubleheader. The Bulldogs have now had three-straight games
decided by just one run after falling to URI on Saturday, 3-2, in
extra innings.
Game one was a heartbreaker for the Bulldogs, holding a 6-5 lead
heading into the bottom of the sixth before a two-run single by
Andrea Lazarri put the Seahawks on top, 7-6, going into the last
inning. Bryant put runners on second and third in the top of the
seventh with one down, as Anne Dobmeier (Buffalo,
N.Y.) was hit by a pitch and Stephanie Mirando
(North Haven, Conn.) singled to left against Armenta. Head
coach Lisa-Ann Wallace brought in Jenna
Jeffrey (Scarborough, Maine) to pinch run for Dobmeier,
and both runners moved up on a passed ball. Lindsay Martin
(Methuen, Mass.) followed, hitting a line drive that was
caught by shortstop Lenart, who fired over to third to double off
the runner and end the game.
Mirando, Ali Chouinard (Swansea, Mass.) and
Laura Bowen (Hudson, Mass.) all pitched in two
hits in the losing effort. Bryant started off the game by taking a,
3-0, lead in the top of the first, with Dobmeier starting the
scoring with an RBI double. Mirando followed with a run-scoring
single, and Martin hit a sacrifice fly to finish the scoring.
Wagner scored once in the bottom of the first to cut the deficit
to, 3-1, and took the lead with a four run third inning, claiming
a, 5-3, advantage. Three of the runs in the third were scored off
of wild pitches, with the fourth coming in on a Vanessa Lenart
double to left.
Kim Leonard (Milford, Mass.) tied the game for
Bryant in the top of the fourth, blasting a two-run home run with
one out, knotting the game at,5-5. Leonard was one-for-three with
two runs scored and two RBI.
The Bulldogs (5-23) reclaimed the lead with a tally in the
sixth, as a double off the bat of Bowen brought in Leonard to give
the visitors a, 6-5, edge at the time. For Bowen, it was her third
multi-hit game of the season while Chouinard made it her
team-leading fifth multi-hit performance.
Samantha Houseal (Mount Joy, Pa.) took the
loss, going six innings while allowing seven runs and striking out
three. Kaelynn Armenta got the win while working a complete game.
Bryant once again got off to a fast start in game two, as the
black and gold scored four in the first, three coming on another
home run by Leonard to take a quick, 4-0, lead. The junior knocked
in five for the day, making her first two starts in the outfield
for the year. Mirando also doubled in a run in the inning.
Wagner (9-17) responded with a run in the bottom of the
first, then put together a four-run rally of their own in the
bottom of the fourth to take a lead that they would not relinquish.
The Seahawks had three-straight hits to start the inning, tying the
score on a single by Hennig before taking a, 5-4, lead on a
throwing error on the next play.
Kate Eshelman was excellent on the mound after the first inning,
only allowing two hits the rest of the way as she went on to get
the win. Ashley Coon (Levittown, Pa.) had a
two-hit performance in the game, going two-for-three to make up
one-third of the Bryant hits.
The Bulldogs will look to snap their nine-game losing skid, as
they play another future Northeast Conference opponent in Central
Connecticut on Wednesday afternoon in a doubleheader (3 p.m. and 5
p.m.).
