BULLDOGS FALL, 3-0, IN TIGHT GAME
WITH BOSTON COLLEGE SATURDAY AFTERNOON
Boxscore
SMITHFIELD, RI - The Bryant softball
team surrendered just three runs, all coming in the fourth inning,
to Boston College Saturday afternoon, but it was just enough for
the visiting Eagles to get past the Bulldogs, 3-0, at the Bryant
Softball Complex. The loss dropped Bryant to 5-16 on the season,
while BC improved to 9-12.
The Eagles tallied three times in the fourth inning off of
Bulldog starter Samantha Houseal (Mount Joy, Pa.).
Boston College had the first three batters reach to start the
inning before Alison Kooistra singled up the middle with one out to
plate the first two runs of the contest. Katrina Vasquez followed
with a squeeze bunt to bring home the third run, staking the Eagles
to a, 3-0, advantage.
Houseal was solid in her seven innings of work, only allowing
the three runs in the fourth inning while striking out seven. The
sophomore set Boston College down in order on three different
occasions, and only allowed two hits after the fourth inning.
Trailing 3-0 in the sixth, the Bulldogs found themselves in a
jam with runners on second and third for BC with none out. Houseal
came up big, striking out Gemma Ypparila for the first out of the
frame. She then got some help from her defense, as Laura
Bowen (Hudson, Mass.) made a great play on a low line
drive to second, catching the ball just above the dirt and firing
to third to get the double play and end the threat.
The Bulldogs had two major threats in the contest, putting two
on with one out in the third before Ashley Coon (Levittown,
Pa.) hit a hot shot to third base that Danielle Weir made
a great play on going towards the line, tagging third and throwing
to first for the inning-ending double play. Bryant had another
chance in the seventh, putting two on again with one out, this time
against Eagle freshman pitcher Morgan Kidd. Kidd erased
Regina Burdo (Wayne, Pa.) on a sacrifice bunt, and
got Bowen Laura Bowen (Hudson, Mass.) to pop out
to short to end the game and record her first career save.
Allison Gage got the win on the mound, shutting out the Bulldogs
in her five innings while striking out five. Bowen, Coon and
Stephanie Mirando (North Haven, Conn.) each had
hits for Bryant.
The Bulldogs remain at home on Sunday for a double header with
the University of Maine (12 p.m. and 2 p.m.).
