WORCESTER, MA - The Bryant University baseball team returned to
the New England region for the first time this year and split a
double-header with Holy Cross Tuesday afternoon. The Bulldogs won
the opener, 4-2 before falling in the second 5-3. Bryant
(10-5) will host Boston College Wednesday afternoon in the home
opener at the Bryant Baseball Complex. First-pitch is set for
3:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs rode the strong arm of Kevin Cobb, who went seven
innings in the opener allowing just two runs on nine hits and
fanned 12 Holy Cross batters to picked up his third win of the
season. Mark Andrews closed out the game to pick up the save,
working two scoreless innings.
Jeff Vigurs went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs while Dylan
Stone went 2-for-5. Vigurs got the Bulldogs on the board with a
two-run home run in the fourth inning. It was Vigurs fifth homer of
the year.
After Holy Cross scored two in the bottom of the fourth to tie the
game, Bryant regain the lead in the sixth.
Jordan English took first base after being hit by a pitch and Jamie
Skagerlind blasted his first home run of the season to put the
Bulldogs back on top 4-2 and Cobb took care of the rest.
In the second game, the Bulldogs scored three times in the top of
the first inning but a five-run third by the Holy Cross (2-11) was
all the scoring they would need to regain the lead and pull out the
victory.
Pat McKenna led off the game with single to left and Stone followed
with a walk. After both runners moved up thanks to a
sacrifice by Nick Campbell, Pat O'Connor laced a double to
right field scoring both McKenna and Stone. Vigurs would plate
O'Connor one batter later with a double of his own to right
to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead right off the bat.
Stone, Campbell and Vigurs each had two hits in the nightcap as Tom
Baker took the loss on the mound after being replaced by Matt
Griswold in the third. Brian O'Neil worked the eighth inning
allowing just one hit in relief.
