Missed Opportunities, Shaky Defense
Derail Bulldogs after Enos' Gem in Game One
April 26,
2008
Game 1 Box / Game 2 Box
Smithfield, RI - Anne Dobmeier's (Buffalo, NY)
RBI double was all the offense senior Janine Enos (Wareham,
Mass) would need as she tossed her sixth shutout of the
season to lead the Bulldogs past Assumption 1-0 Saturday afternoon.
But in game two, the Bulldogs committed five errors and dropped a
3-2 decision.
Enos (14-4) won her second straight 1-0 decision. On Tuesday,
she shut out Saint Anselm in ten innings before going seven full
Saturday. The senior struck out five and did not walk any. The only
Bulldog offense came on Dobmeier's double in the bottom of the
sixth. After a Jennifer Serrano (Stoneham, Mass.)
single and a sacrifice bunt by Stephanie Mirando (North
Haven, CT), Dobmeier doubled deep off the left-centerfield
fence.
In game two, the Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top
of the third on RBI singles by Amanda Monge and Marissa Palumbo.
The damage could have been worse, but centerfielder Kim
Breton (Leominster, Mass.) threw out Monge at the plate to
end the inning.
The Bulldogs knotted the game up in the bottom of the frame
thanks to back-to-back triples by Breton and Serrano and an error
plated two. The Greyhounds went up for good in the fifth when
Korina Salafia laced an RBI single to put the Hounds up 3-2. The
Bulldogs last good chance came in the sixth when Ali
Chouinard (Swansea, Mass.) drew a walk and Kate
Thomas (Bedford, NH) knocked a single.
The Bulldogs appeared to take the lead when pitcher Lauren
Symonick threw a roller by Ashley Coon (Levittown,
PA) down the right field line, scoring Chouinard and
Thomas. But the umpires conferred and ruled that Coon's bat had hit
the ball twice, making it a dead ball strike. The runners were
returned to first and second and Coon eventually grounded out.
The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow (Sunday) with a noon
doubleheader with St. Michael's. The Bulldogs will honor seniors
Enos, Serrano, and Jessica Valentini (Cliffside Park,
NJ) on Senior Day.
