BULLDOGS FALL TO BINGHAMTON, 68-61,
SUNDAY AFTERNOON
Boxscore
VESTAL, N.Y. - Despite a double-double from junior
Kelsey O'Keefe (Warren, Mass.) and a game-high 17
points from senior Cara Johnson (Endicott, N.Y.),
the Bryant University women's basketball team fell just short
against Binghamton University, falling 68-61 Sunday afternoon at
the Events Center.
Turnovers plagued the Bulldogs (1-2) again against the Bearcats
(2-2), striking first in the opening frame as a 5-2 Bryant
advantage - gained through tough on defense from both teams at the
game's outset - turned into a 14-11 Binghamton edge.
The Bearcats would go on a 15-0 run to move the score to 24-11
before a pair of Amanda Pierlioni (Plainfield,
Conn.) would get the Bulldogs back on the scoring side.
But with just over 7:30 left to play in the first, Bryant went
on a run of their own, outscoring the home team, 17-8 through the
end of the half, including a 9-6 edge in the final two minutes,
capped off by a Johnson three-pointer at the buzzer - to enter the
locker room down just three at the half, 38-35.
O'Keefe made it a one-point game out of the intermission, but
the Bearcats would quickly regain a six-point lead.
That advantage would grow to a 51-43 tally in favor of
Binghamton with just under 12 minutes on the clock and the lead
would hold until two baskets capped off by a long jumper from
junior Jaime Campbell (Springfield, Mass.)
tightened the deficit to 55-50.
With 4:30 remaining, a rebound collected by sophomore
Kelli Reynolds (Milford, Conn.) shot across the
floor in a pass to O'Keefe who quickly fed it off to Johnson for a
fast break layup and the completion of a pretty play down the full
court to keep the home side's lead at five, 60-55.
But the Bulldogs and the Bearcats both had opportunities down
the stretch from the free throw line, with neither side taking full
advantage, leaving the Bulldogs in line for the 68-61 loss.
O'Keefe totaled 13 points and 10 boards for the game's only
double-double, while Johnson complimented her 17 points with eight
off the glass. Binghamton was led by 17 points and eight board from
Daryll Peterson.
Bryant took a 38-34 edge on the glass, including a 16-11
advantage on the offensive boards, while losing the turnover game,
32-27.
Bryant shot just 57.1 percent (12-for-21) from the line, while
the Bearcats didn't fare much better at 57.9 (11-of-19). Binghamton
shot 58.6 percent in the first half for 49.1 percent on the day,
while Bryant shot just 39.3 percent on the day, with a 46.6 percent
total in the opening frame.
The Bulldogs next travel to New Britain, Conn. to take on future
Northeast Conference rival Central Connecticut State, Tues., Nov.
