Assistant Coach Brian Murphy Named Head Coach of Battle
Creek Bombers
January 16, 2007
BATTLE CREEK, MI - Bryant University Assistant
Baseball Coach Brian Murphy was hired Tuesday by the Battle Creek
Bombers of the Northwoods League to be their manager for the summer
of 2007. Murphy, currently in his 2nd season at
Bryant, will become the first manager in the history of the
Bombers, as they are an expansion team who will be entering play in
the Northwoods League this summer.
Murphy is in his second season as an assistant coach at Bryant
University in Smithfield, RI. As the team's top assistant, Murphy
works primarily with the Bulldogs' hitters, catchers and
outfielders, and serves as the team's recruiting coordinator. He
also handles the Bulldogs' third base coaching duties and helps
direct the Bulldogs' offense.
During the past two summers, Murphy also served as an assistant
coach for the Hyannis Mets of the Cape Cod Baseball League. As the
top assistant for the Mets, Brian again worked primarily with the
team's hitters, catchers and outfielders while assisting in the
recruitment of college players from around the country.
"We are thrilled to have Brian on board as the Bombers
first-ever Field Manager," said Rick Lindau, General Manager for
the Bombers. "Brian brings a wealth of coaching experience to the
job, and, along with two summers coaching in a high-level summer
collegiate baseball league, he is the right guy to lead this team
in our first season in the Northwoods League," added Lindau.
Murphy graduated from Merrimack College (North Andover, MA) in
2003 with a degree in management. During his playing career at
Merrimack, Murphy, a two-time team captain, was among the
Northeast-10 Conference leaders in batting average and RBIs. A
three-year starter at catcher, Brian was the team's Most Valuable
Player in 2003 when he led the team in hitting and finished
8th among all Northeast-10 Conference players.
"I am honored to be the first manager of the Bombers, and am
thankful to both Rick and Dick Radatz for this opportunity," said
Murphy. "I look forward to working with very talented
ballplayers from around the country and bringing an exciting
brand of baseball to the fans of Battle Creek."
