BRYANT SOFTBALL CAPTURES NORTHEAST-10
CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP
Bulldogs Best in Conference After Blanking Top-Seeded Le Moyne, 4-0
Sunday
SYRACUSE, NY – Freshman pitcher Janine Enos pitched a
one-hitter to lead the Bryant University softball team to a
4-0 win over top-seed Le Moyne Sunday in the championship game of
the 2005 Northeast-10 Conference Softball Tournament. In addition,
Enos was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, with two
shutouts and just five hits in two games.
With the win, Bryant improves to 29-15 on the season. The 29
wins set a new school record for most wins in a season, passing the
old mark of 28 set back in 1993. It was also the first softball
championship in Bryant softball history.
In the final Sunday, Bryant got the scoring
started in the fifth inning when Lindsay Connor lined a singl to
score Amanda Wilbur from third in what would prove to be the
eventual game-winning run. Wilbur reached on a single and
later stole second. She would move into scoring position thanks to
a perfect sacrifice bunt by Jess Valentini.
The Bulldogs would then explode for three runs in the sixth,
giving plenty of support for Enos (pictured) to close the
door on the Dolphins.
Diane Cummings started the rally with a sacrifice fly to score
Diedre Kittredge. Briana Durborow would follow with a two-run
single, scoring both Jordan Dargon and Wilbur who had reached base
safely on an error and walk respectively.
Connor finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and
Durborow went 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Megan Leppin recorded Le
Moyne's only hit as the Dolphins would never get a runner
past second base on the afternoon.
Bryant, ranked eighth in last week's NCAA regional poll, will
now await the announcement of the NCAA Championship bracket on
Monday. The Bulldogs have earned an automatic qualification
into the 2005 NCAA tournament as champions of the
Northeast-10. This will be Bryant's second-straight trip to
the NCAA tournament having earned an at-large bid in
2004.
