Bryant earns split with UMBC to close out regular season

BALTIMORE – The Bryant baseball team split a doubleheader with UMBC on the final day of the regular season at Alumni Field. UMBC won the opener, 2-0, but the Bulldogs grabbed the nightcap, 8-5.

With the split, the Bulldogs finish the regular season 33-19 overall and 17-7 in America East play. Bryant will now prepare for the 2024 America East Baseball Championships which start Wednesday in Vestal, N.Y. The top-seeded Bulldogs will play Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m. against the lowest remaining seed from Wednesday's single-elimination play-in round.

UMBC made a pair of second-inning runs stand up in the opener, while Bryant scored five times in the fourth and broke a 5-5 tie with three in the seventh in game two. Justin Hackett went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in game two.

How it Happened (Game 2)

  • UMBC grabbed the lead with a two-out single in the bottom of the first.
  • It remained 1-0 until the Bryant bats awoke in the fourth. The Bulldogs scored five times on four hits in the inning. Brandyn Durand tied the game as laced a 2-2 pitch off the left field wall for an RBI double. Matt Smith then followed with a deep drive to center that was just out of the reach of a leaping center fielder for a two-run triple. Justin Hackett hit the very next pitch over the left field wall for a two-run home run.
  • UMBC erased the deficit with four runs in the fifth. A single and a walk opened the inning, leading to an RBI single. Back-to-back RBI singles with the bases loaded made it 5-4 and a ground out to first tied the game at 5-5.
  • Bryant broke the deadlock with three runs in the top of the seventh. Hackett walked and Zac Zyons followed with a perfect bunt single. Gavin Noriega gave Bryant the lead with a hard single through the right side. Chris Einemann brought home Zyons with a sac fly and Jackson Phinney capped the inning with an RBI single.
  • UMBC had a chance in the 8th, putting two on with one out. Zach Nichols got a strikeout for the first out and then Petosa snared a line drive at first and stepped on the bag to double off the runner.

  • Carmine Petosa has now reached safely in all 52 games this season and 55 straight dating back to last season. It extends his program record.
  • Zyons extended his on-base streak to 32 games.
  • Noriega picked up his 55th RBI of the season, the most in America East.
  • LeVangie's 4.0 inning start was his longest start of the season. He matched his career high with five strikeouts.
  • Zaslaw has now tossed 4.0 scoreless innings over his last three outings.
  • Ryan Bradley notched his first career save and has allowed two runs over his last seven outings (9.1 innings).
