Box Score SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Brett Wichrowski struck out a career-high nine over 5.0 scoreless innings and Lewis Barnum finished a triple shy of the cycle as the Bryant University baseball team earned a 7-3 victory over UMBC on Saturday afternoon at Conaty Park.
With the win, the Bulldogs snap a five-game losing streak and improve to 14-16 overall and 5-6 in America East play. The two teams will play the rubber match of their series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Wichrowski scattered five hits, walked four and struck out nine over 5.0 scoreless as he earned his third win of the year. Chase Jeter and Austin Wainer each tossed 2.0 innings relief to close it out.
Barnum went 4-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. He had two doubles in the game and hit his third home run of the year. Gavin Noriega added three hits and two RBI, while Jake Gustin had two hits and scored twice.

How it Happened

- It remained scoreless until the fifth when Gustin and Derek Smith singled with one out. Barnum then launched an 0-1 pitch over the left center wall to make it 3-0.
- UMBC would then put two on to start the sixth but Jeter entered and retired the next three batters to end the inning.
- In the seventh, Bryant committed a throwing error with runners on first and second. The throw to first skipped up in the air but Carmine Petosa alertly recovered and fired home to get the runner.
- Bryant added a fourth run in the seventh. Barnum reached, stole second and alertly took third as the ball got away. Noriega followed with a single through the left side to score Barnum.
- UMBC would pick up a run in the top of the eighth with a sac fly.
- The Bulldogs scored three key insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Jackson Phinney singled, moved to second on a sac bunt and scored on a single from Gustin. Barnum then scored Gustin with a double and Noriega plated Barnum with a single.
- The runs proved important as the Retrievers picked up a two-run double in the top of the ninth. Wainer was able to retire the final three hitters to end the game.
