SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University softball team split its Day Two action at the San Diego Classic II Friday afternoon, topping Marist, 5-3, before falling to Texas-Arlington, 2-1.
Game 1
After going scoreless for the first four innings, the Bulldogs exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure a 5-3 victory over Marist.
Junior shortstop Aubrey Mable (Aurora, Colo.) highlighted the offensive outburst in the fifth inning with a two-run double to right center, scoring classmates Kendall Corder (Carmichael, Calif.) and Lauren Guy (La Habra, Calif.). Corder and Taylor Bell (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) each tallied RBI singles in the innings, while sophomore Madeline Velasquez (Los Angeles, Calif.) knocked in Mable off a double to center.
Bell and Corder paced the Bulldogs, both going 2-for-3 at the dish, while freshman Mollie Anderson (East Greenwich, R.I.) picked up her first career collegiate hits, finishing the afternoon with a pair of singles and a run scored.
Senior Brittany Hart (North Andover, Mass.) threw seven solid innings allowing just three runs (only one earned) while striking out three.
Game 2
Bryant held a 1-0 advantage through five and a half innings, however a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth by the Mavericks were just enough to earn the 2-1 edge.
Senior Jennifer Jacob (Deer Park, N.Y.) was impressive for the Bulldogs allowing just two unearned runs and four hits in six innings of work. Classmate Talia Zizza (Reading, Mass.) notched the lone RBI for the Black and Gold in the top of the second, flying out to leftfield to score Bell. Senior outfielder Kate Murray (Fitchburg, Mass.) collected the only other hit for the Bulldogs, going 1-for-2 in the contest.
The Bulldogs will close their action in San Diego on Saturday against UNLV at 12 p.m. EST before a rematch against the University of San Diego at 5 p.m. EST.
