BRYANT MEN'S SOCCER EDGED BY STONY BROOK,
2-1
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Senior Norbert Guery
(Andover, Mass.) scored his first goal of the season but
the Bryant University men's soccer team came up just short to host
Stony Brook, losing 2-1 Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Bulldogs snapped their two-game winning
streak to fall to 2-3 on the young season while Stony Brook evened
its record to 4-4 overall.
After an uneventful first half with neither team able to record
a shot on goal, the game picked up dramatically after intermission
as both clubs scored in the 63rd minute. The scoring
opened with Stony Brook sophomore Leonardo Fernandes netting his
first of two goals on a hard shot past Bulldog keeper
Victor Tutino (Deer park, N.Y.). The resilient
Bulldogs answered back just 29 seconds later as Guery drove right
through the Seawolves' backline and placed a shot past keeper
Stefan Manz to even the score.
Stony Brook broke the 1-1 tie eleven minutes later as Fernandes
received a free kick 20-feet out from the Bryant net and chipped a
shot over the head of Tutino for his second tally of the contest.
Refusing to end quietly, the Bulldogs had a late scoring chance
in the 88th minute but junior Ben Lawrence
(Amherst, N.H.) could not get his shot past the dive of
Manz and the Seawolves closed out the game on top.
Bryant was outshot, 11-6 with five shots coming in the second
half while the hosts also took more corner kicks by a margin of
4-1. Tutino recorded two saves in the Bulldog net while Manz also
stopped two for the Seawolves.
The Bryant University men's soccer team ends non-conference
action on Wednesday, Sept. 22 with a visit to New Hampshire at 7:00
p.m.
