BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Senior Nick
Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) went 4-for-4 with four
runs scored and three RBIs while freshman Peter Kelich
(Jackson, N.J.) picked up his seventh win of the season to
lead Bryant to a 21-2 win over Long Island University Sunday,
closing out the weekend series taking three of four against the
Blackbirds.
The win keeps the Bulldogs alone in first place in the Northeast
Conference by three games over Sacred Heart which defeated Wagner
Sunday to keep pace at 15-9 in the league. Bryant, 18-6 in
the NEC, will travel to Quinnipiac next weekend for a four game
series before closing out the year at home against Sacred Heart May
19-21.
Bryant (27-21) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI
single by Campbell in the first, scoring Kevin Brown
(Northborough, Mass.) from third. Later in the fourth,
Campbell would come across to score on a groundout by
Zakary Cianciolo (Prospect, Conn.) to give the
Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs would add to the lead later in the sixth on an RBI
single by Jamie Skagerlind (Holden,
Mass.) and a two-run home run by Tim Norton
(Barnstable, Mass.) to make it 5-0.
But that would be just a prelude for what was to come in the
seventh as the Bulldogs scored 11 runs thanks in part once again to
the hot bat of Campbell who drove in a run with a single scoring
Brown who led off the inning with a four-pitch walk.
Bryant would later load the bases where a Cianciolo drew a full
count walk to score Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor,
Conn.) for the second run of the inning. Skagerlind would
soon follow with an RBI single of his own. With the bases
still full, Norton stepped to the plate and cleared the bases with
a three-run double to left.
Batting around, Campbell would again come to the plate with the
bases loaded and came through with his second hit of the inning and
fourth of the game to score Brown. I
The lead would grow to 18-0 before LIU (13-35, 10-18) would
finally get on the board with a run in the bottom of the
eighth. In the ninth, reserve Dan Mello (Peabody,
Mass.), got into the action by belting his first career
home run, a three-run shot to left to make it 21-1.
Freshman Tim Bessette (Waterbury, Conn.) worked
the ninth out of the bullpen, allowing a run but closing out the
game by getting Sam Sciamerelli to strike out swinging to end the
game.
Campbell finished the day going 4-for-4 at the plate with a walk
while driving in three and scoring four times in the game. It was
his 20th multiple hit game of the season and third,
4-hit game of the year. Dylan Stone (Portsmouth,
R.I.) and Jordan English (Windsor Locks,
Conn.) each had a pair of hits as Bryant collected a
combined 20 hits on the afternoon. Kelich, Bryant's key
Sunday starter all season long, allowed just three hits and
striking out four in six innings.
