BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Bryant University baseball team split
a Northeast Conference doubleheader with Long Island University
Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs took the opener 6-1 behind a
strong pitching performance from senior Eric Polvani
(Wallingford, Conn.) and extend its conference win streak
to 11 games. The Bulldogs would drop the nightcap, 11-8
despite out-hitting the Blackbirds 13-9.
Polvani evened his season record 5-5 with a complete game
six-hitter. The senior righty allowed just one run in the
sixth while striking out eight batters and allowing just one walk.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI
single by Jordan English (Windsor Locks, Conn.) to
score Connor Carignan (Norwich, Conn.) who led off
the inning with a single through the left side. The Bulldogs
threatened to add to the lead loading the bases with two outs, but
LIU was able to get out of the inning with a strikeout.
Bryant would add two more runs in the fifth thanks to two-run
home run by Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor, Conn.) to
make it 3-0.
In the sixth, Vigurs would strike again. After an RBI
single by Kevin Brown (Northborough, Mass.) the
senior catch stepped to the plate and laced a two run double to
right to make it 6-0. Vigurs finished the day 2-for-3 with four
RBIs and a run scored. Senior Nick Campbell (Raynham,
Mass.) had his 18-game come to an end in the game.
In the second game, the Bulldogs took a 6-3 lead into the fifth
but LIU would score five times in the bottom of the fifth and would
add three more in the seventh to win 11-8. Brown led the
Bulldogs going 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI and three runs
scored. English also had a three-hit game while Dylan
Stone (Portsmouth, R.I.) went 2-for-3.
Freshman Joseph Michaud (Milford, Conn.) took
the loss in relief of starter Sal Lisanti (Bronx,
N.Y.) who went four innings allowing five runs on five
hits.
Bryant (26-21, 17-6 NEC) and LIU (13-34, 10-17) will close out
the four game weekend series with a single game Sunday at 1 pm.
