BULLDOGS DEFEAT HOLY CROSS
7-2; COMPLETE SEASON-SWEEP OF CRUSADERS
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – After falling
behind 2-0 after just two innings of play, the Bryant University
softball team battled back to defeat The College of the Holy Cross
by a margin of 7-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Freshman Field. The
win completes the season-sweep of the Crusaders for the Bulldogs as
they defeated the Royal Purple by the exact same score in their BU
home-opener.
The Bulldogs wrap up non-conference play by snapping their
current four-game losing-streak with the victory. Bryant is now
8-33 overall in the program's second season at the Division I
level. Holy Cross, a Patriot League member, falls to 13-28 on the
season.
Bryant was actually outhit 11-9 in the contest but three errors
proved to be costly for the Crusaders. Bryant committed zero errors
in the contest.
Holy Cross jumped out to the early lead with one run in both the
first and second innings to take the early 2-0 lead. That's
all it took for freshman Jennifer Jacob (Deer Park,
N.Y.) to settle down as the right-handed hurler would hold
the Crusaders scoreless for the rest of game.
Freshman Brittany Lischinsky (Mahopac, N.Y.)
and the Bulldogs would get one pack in the top of the fourth inning
as the first baseman led off the frame with a single up the middle.
Tri-captain Ashley Coon (Levittown, Pa.) would
move the freshman over to second on a sacrifice bunt and she would
advance to third on a Talia Zizza (Reading, Mass.)
foul out to right field. Following a Lauren McCart
(Voorhees, N.J.) walk, Lischinsky raced home to score on a
wild pitch.
Lischinsky had a team-high three hits in the contest, going 3-4
with two runs and an RBI. The freshman's average climbed over
.300 for the first time of the season as it now sits at .305.
Using the small-ball method once again, the Bulldogs were able
to tally two more runs in the top of the fifth inning. The inning
was highlighted by an RBI single from Lischinsky which plated
junior Regi Burdo (Wayne, Pa.) and a Coon
sacrifice fly which plated freshman Kate Murray (Fitchburg,
Mass.). Murray went 2-3 at the plate for the day and it
was Coon's second sacrifice of the game.
Jacob continued to pitch well for the Bulldogs, holding the
Crusaders to just one hit over the next two innings.
With Bryant up 3-2 heading into the top of the last frame the
Bulldogs were looking to add-on some insurance runs.
The Bulldogs did just that in the top of the seventh as they
tallied four runs on four hits and two Holy Cross errors to take a
7-2 lead into the bottom of the last frame.
Jacob and the Bulldog defense did their part in the bottom of
the seventh holding HC to just one hit and no runs to secure their
eighth win of the season.
The freshman right-hander picked up the win in the contest, her
second of the 2010 campaign and fanned seven in the process.
The Crusaders had three different players go 3-4 in the contest.
McCart went 1-3 in the game with a triple while Lindsay
Martin (Methuen, Mass.), Ali Chouinard (Swansea,
Mass.) and Burdo all had one hit.
The Black and Gold return to Northeast Conference action on
Saturday, May 1 when they travel to Sacred Heart for a doubleheader
with the Pioneers.
