BULLDOG SOFTBALL
SPLITS ON OPENING DAY OF REBEL GAMES
SMITHFIELD, RI - The Bryant University
softball team picked up its first win of 2010 season in the day
game Sunday, defeating Detroit-Mercy 6-3, but later fell to
Fairfield University by a score of 6-0 in the nightcap.
The Bulldogs (1-6) picked up their first win of the 2010 season
in their first game at the Rebel Games with a 6-3 victory over
Detroit-Mercy (0-5).
Bryant opened the scoring in the day game with two runs in the
first inning. Sophomore Laura Bowen (Hudson,
Mass.) and freshman Talia Zizza (Reding,
Mass.) led off the inning with two singles before senior
tri-captain Ali Chouinard (Swansea, Mass.) hit a
sacrifice fly to score Bowen for the first run of the game.
Ashley Coon (Levittown, Pa.), one of the other two
captains, proceeded to hit a double and score Zizza later in the
inning as the Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead after one inning of play.
Detroit-Mercy would get one run back in the third inning but the
Bulldogs would answer in the fourth with one run of their own to
make it 3-1 after four innings of play.
The Black and Gold tallied three runs in the fifth inning to
make the score 6-1 after five innings of play. Bowen got the action
going again as she led off with a double. Chouinard followed up
with a double of her own to move Bowen over to third and give the
Bulldogs runners on second and third with no outs. Zizza laid down
a sacrifice bunt to score Bowen in the next Bryant at bat a move
Chouinard over to third. Freshman Kelly Cocco (Vernon,
Conn.) followed up by hitting a single to score Chouinard.
A single by Coon and an errant pitch which hit sophomore
Lauren McCart (Voorhees, N.J.) to load the bases
for the Bulldogs in the fifth. Senior outfielder Kim
Leonard (Milford, Mass.) would pick up an RBI as she drew
a walk in the next at bat and plated Cocco to bring the score to
6-1 after five innings of play.
Detorit-Mercy would get one run back in the sixth and one in the
seventh but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs went on to win their
first game of the 2010 season, 6-3.
Bowen, Chouinard and Coon all went 2-4 in the game, each with a
double. Freshman Brittany Hart (North Andover,
Mass.) pitched five and one third innings to earn the
victory. Cocco came in to finish the game off on the mound for the
Bulldogs.
In the nightcap the Bulldogs could not find a way to hit the
Fairfield Stags pitching staff as they had only three hits in the
game. Bowen, McCart and freshman Brittany Lischinsky
(Mahopac, N.Y.) had one hit apiece as the Black and Gold
were downed 6-0.
The Bulldogs return to action on Monday, March 8th at 11 a.m.
against Lehigh in the first game of a doubleheader. They return to
action directly after against Butler.
