BULLDOGS DROP HEARTBREAKER ON THE
ROAD, FALL TO SIENA, 14-11
Boxscore
SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Sophomore Lauren Sheridan (Bethpage,
N.Y.) and senior Allison Faiola (Billerica,
Mass.) chipped in four goals apiece while second-year
goalie Lauren Filippone (West Babylon, N.Y.)
recorded 11 stops, but it wouldn't be enough to overcome Siena
Wednesday afternoon as the Bryant University women's lacrosse team
fell, 14-11, on the road in Loudonville, N.Y.
Bryant's scoring came from a trio of players in Sheridan, Faiola
and junior Meg Atha (Valley Cottage, N.Y.), who
added a trio of goals of her own, but it was 11 points from Saints'
attacker Caitlin Mikel (4 goals, 7 assists) that would doom the
visiting Bulldogs, who were outshot, 33-22, by Siena (2-0).
Allie Kain joined Mikel as a four-goal scorer in the outing,
while Erin Hepper chipped in three. Siena would also get one apiece
from Deirdre McQuillan, Michelle Andreo and Maggie Deloria.
A pair of tallies from Mikel and a score from Kain put the home
side up, 3-0, before Bryant got on the board and answered, notching
a trio of goals of their own to knot the score at 3-3. Faiola would
get the first with 21:10 to play in the opening half before
Sheridan brought the Saints' lead within one just 25 seconds later
on an unassisted score. She would go on to earn her team a tie
entering the halftime break with a free position goal with just
1:25 to play before the intermission.
And while Siena would build a two-goal edge out of the break, it
seemed that the Bulldogs would answer all day, re-tying the game at
5-5 on an Atha free position goal with 24:38 to play after Sheridan
recorded her third tally of the day three minutes prior.
A trio of Siena goals within a four-minute span regained the
lead for the home side, 8-5, but back-to-back scores from Faiola
cut the lead to just one with 14:44 still to play in regulation.
But from there, Bryant would be outscored, 6-4, in the final
10:38 of the second session. The Bulldogs were down by as many as
five in the final 30 minutes, but used goals from Sheridan and Atha
in the final two minutes - including an Atha score from
Antoinette Lombardi (Wallingford, Conn.) with 32
seconds left - to bring the score to 14-11 before the final
whistle.
Sophomore Mary Green (Merrick, N.Y.) added a
pair of assists on the day for the Bulldogs, who converted on three
of their seven free position chances. Bryant picked up 21 ground
balls on the day, led by six from Nicole Rettinger (Dix
Hills, N.Y.), but struggled on the clear, going just
13-for-23. Filippone was again strong between the pipes, collecting
11 saves.
The Bulldogs open Northeast Conference action with their next
contest, taking on Central Connecticut on the road Saturday
afternoon (1 p.m.).
