SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Bryant University softball team fell,
3-2, to Sacred Heart in their final game of their inaugural
Division I season at the Bryant Softball Complex on Saturday. The
Bulldogs honored seniors Anne Dobmeier (Buffalo,
N.Y.) and Stephanie Mirando (North Haven,
Conn.) in a ceremony following the game, as the two put on
the black and gold for the final time.
The Bulldogs played their 14th one-run game of the
year, going 3-11 in those contests as they played Division I
competition tough in their first season. The team also finished
with a 5-5 record against Northeast Conference competition.
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, Bryant
responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to
take a 2-1 lead. Ali Chouinard (Swansea, Mass.)
started the rally with a double to lead-off the inning, driving her
first of two hits on the day. Lindsay Martin (Methuen,
Mass.) reached on an error by the first baseman, putting
two runners on for Dobmeier with just one out. The senior hit a
single that dropped into center field, scoring both runs to put the
Bulldogs on top. Dobmeier was one-for-two with a walk in her final
game as a Bulldog.
Samantha Houseal (Mount Joy, Pa.) would make
that lead stand-up until the fourth, as the sophomore threw her
29th complete game of the season. Houseal allowed three
runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out three. She
finished the year with the single-season record in strikeouts with
180 and innings pitched with 249.2.
The Pioneers tied the game up in the top of the fourth, tallying
a run on an error with two outs to knot the score at 2-2. Adrian
Fitzsimon got on with one out in the inning on a double, and would
later to come around to score. Fitzimon and Taylor Froelich each
had a pair of hits in the contest.
Betsy Harvey pushed Sacred Heart ahead in the fifth, as she hit
a single to right field with two outs in the frame that scored
Froelich from second, giving the visitors the slight, 3-2 edge.
Pioneer starter Jen Russell was able to hold the Bulldogs at bay
after the first, as she only allowed two hits and four baserunners
after the first inning.
The Bulldogs were able to put some pressure on in the seventh
against Russel, as Dobmeier worked a walk to lead-off the inning
and Laura Bowen (Hudson, Mass.) singled to put two
on with one out. But Russell was able to get the final two
outs to clinch the win for Sacred Heart.
Bryant finished their first season with an 11-31 record, showing
tremendous improvement throughout the year against tough Division I
competition. The Bulldogs will now have some time off to rest
before returning for fall practice.
