BRYANT DROPS PAIR TO MAINE ON
SUNDAY; FALL 12-7 IN GAME ONE, 6-0 IN GAME TWO

SMITHFIELD, R.I - The Bryant University softball team finished
off the weekend with a pair of losses to the University of Maine,
falling 12-7 in game one and 6-0 in game two on Sunday afternoon at
the Bryant Softball Complex. The Bulldogs have now dropped
four-straight, putting their record at 5-18 for the season while
Maine improved to 20-13.
Sophomore pitcher Samantha Houseal (Mount Joy,
Pa.) took the loss in both contests, going 5.2 innings in
game one while allowing ten earned runs and striking out four, and
the full seven in game two, surrendering just three earned runs and
punching out eight.
Bryant took an early lead in game one, scoring three runs in the
bottom of the first to take a, 3-1, lead. All three of the runs
came with two outs, as Kate Thomas (Bedford, N.H.)
started the rally with an RBI double to center field that scored
Lindsay Martin (Methuen, Mass.). Thomas went
three-for-four in the game with two runs scored and two RBI. The
senior would advance to third on a wild pitch and come around to
score on an error by Maine starter Ashley Kelley. Ali
Chouinard (Swansea, Mass.) followed with an RBI double,
knocking Kelley out of the game after just two-thirds of an inning.
Chouinard had a pair of hits in the game to go along with two RBI.
Maine got a big boost in the third inning, as Terren Hall hit a
three-run blast to left center field with one out to give the Black
Bears a, 4-3, lead that they would not relinquish.
The Black Bears tallied in each of the next four innings,
scoring two in the fourth, two in the second, three in the sixth
and one more in the seventh to give them a total of 12 to go along
with 14 hits. Stephanie Barrett (Plaistow, N.H.)
relieved Houseal in the sixth inning, going 1.1 innings while
allowing one run on two hits and striking out one.
Trailing 11-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Stephanie
Mirando (North Haven, Conn.) gave the Bulldogs some life
with a two-run double to left center field to get Bryant within
six. Mirando was two-for-three in the first game.
The Bulldogs threatened in the seventh, as Thomas stroked
another RBI double to plate one, but Cayleigh Montano would get out
of the jam, as she recorded the win on the mound for the Black
Bears.
Game two started off much differently, as neither team could get
on the board through the first three frames. Houseal was excellent,
allowing just four baserunners through the first three.
The Black Bears put a three spot on the board in the fourth, as
Courtney Gingrich hit a two-run bases loaded double to break the
scoreless tie with nobody out in the inning. Stephany Hebert
followed with an RBI single to put the visitors on top, 3-0.
Houseal was able to get out of the jam without any further damage,
stranding runners on second and third.
Anne Dobmeier (Buffalo, N.Y.) got the first hit
of the game for the Bulldogs off of Maine starter Alex Soulharis in
the fifth inning, as she doubled to right center, but would be
stranded on third base. Dobmeier was two-for-three at the plate in
game two.
Maine put one across in the fifth and two more in the seventh to
help put the game away. Thomas and Regina Burdo (Wayne,
Pa.) would be the only other Bulldogs to record hits, as
Bryant had just five baserunners in the game.
The Bulldogs will look to bounce back on Thursday, as they host
Harvard in a double-header at the Bryant Softball Complex (3 p.m.
and 5 p.m.).
