SOFTBALL LOSES EXTRA-INNING BATTLE WITH SIU-EDWARDSVILLE, 6-2;
DOWNED BY MAINE, 10-4, TUESDAY
Boxscore vs.
SIU-Edwardsville
KISSIMMEE, FLA. - The Bryant University softball team battled to
a, 0-0, tie through the first seven innings with SIU-Edwardsville,
but a five-run ninth inning broke the game open as the Cougars
defeated the Bulldogs, 6-2, in extra innings. Bryant also fell in
its second game, losing, 10-4, to the University of Maine.
Sophomore starting pitcher Samantha Houseal (Mount Joy,
Pa.) was dominant through the first seven innings,
allowing only four hits without surrendering a run to the 2007
Division II National Champions. In fact, only three runners reached
scoring position through the first seven frames.
The Cougars (14-5) finally broke the scoreless tie on an RBI
single by Kasey Schlafke that scored Chaleen Rumpf, who was placed
on second to start the inning as part of international tiebreaking
rules, with none out in the top of the eighth, to give SIUE the 1-0
lead.
The Bulldogs (2-14) needed a run in the bottom of the inning to
stay alive. The squad was able to manufacture a tally as freshman
Lindsay Martin (Methuen, Mass.) sacrificed
Steph Mirando (North Haven, Conn.) to third to
start the frame, setting up a Lauren McCart (Vorhees,
N.J.) RBI groundout to second base to knot the game at one
apiece.
After the first batter of the ninth was hit by a pitch, Houseal
retired Christina Signore on a sacrifice bunt and got Lindsey
Liermann to strike out swinging, as runners stood on second and
third with two outs. Courtney Mall would draw a walk to load the
bases, and Rumpf would follow that up with a walk of her own to
break the tie and give the Cougars a 2-1 lead.
Schlafke broke the game open with a two-run single to give SIUE
some cushion. The Cougars would tack on two more to take a, 6-1,
lead into the bottom of the ninth.
Ashley Coon (Levittown, Pa.) would drive home a
run in the bottom of the inning to get the Bulldogs a little close,
but it was not enough as Bryant fell, 6-2. SIUE had beaten the
Bulldogs in Bryant's first game of the season, 14-0, and was much
more competitive today against a Cougar team that had 13-straight
30-win seasons at the Division II level.
Kaitlin Colosimo was outstanding on the mound for the Cougars,
going all nine innings while allowing just five hits and zero
earned runs. She also struck out 11 batter without surrendering a
single walk. Bryant did not get a runner into scoring position
until extra innings against Colosimo.
The Bulldogs followed up a tough loss to SIU-Edwardsville with
a, 10-4, defeat at the hands of the Blackbears of Maine. The
Bulldogs are now 1-5 at the Rebel Games with two contests
remaining.
The team will have two days to enjoy the sights of Florida
before getting back on the field Friday for their final two games
against Bucknell and Youngstown State (11 a.m. and 3 p.m.).
