UMASS LOWELL DEFEATS
BRYANT 3-2 IN BASEBALL THURSDAY
Boxscore
SMITHFIELD, RI – Junior Pat Donovan (Lowell,
Mass.) got out of a ninth-inning jam by striking out two
batters as visiting UMass Lowell defeated Bryant University, 3-2 in
a non-conference baseball game Thursday at the Bryant Baseball
Complex.
Bryant trailed 3-2 entering the bottom of the ninth but got a key
leadoff single to left by senior Nick Tucarella
(Salem,
NH). Pinch runner
Chad Valenti
(Glastonbury,
Conn.) moved to second on a
sacrifice by Adam Vuolo
(Walpole,
Mass.). Valenti would move
up to third after a throwing error by Lowell catcher Bob
Theriault (Lowell,
Mass.) attempting to pick Valenti
off second.
With the tying run just 90 feet away, Donovan settled down as the
righty struck out Mike Rocco
(Tewksbury,
Mass.) on a 3-and-2 pitch and
after surrendering a walk to Daryle Crowley
(Danvers,
Mass.), struck out Bryant's
Jason Alexander
(Simsbury,
Conn.) to end the game. It
was Donovan's third save of the season.
UML (12-2) scored two runs in the top of the third and added
another in the fifth off Bryant starter Luke Cowan
(Wilton,
Conn.). Brenden
Fullerton (Beverly,
Mass.), Tim Keene
(Berlin,
NH) and Tim Manton
(Swansea,
Mass.) each had two hits for
Lowell. Tucarella had two of Bryant's six hits in the
game.
