UMBC SCORES FOUR IN NINTH TO STUN BULLDOGS ON SATURDAY

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – UMBC scored four times in the top of the ninth to stun the Bryant baseball team and earn a 7-5 victory on Saturday afternoon at Conaty Park.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 25-22 overall and 12-11 in America East play. UMBC has taken the first two games of the series and will go for the sweep on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Bryant held a 5-3 lead with one out in the ninth before the Retrievers rallied for four runs. Danny Melton's chopper up the first base line that appeared destined for a foul ball kicked fair to put two on and a hit batter loaded the bases. After a strikeout, Ehi Okojie tied the game with a single up the middle. It started a string of three-straight RBI singles to give UMBC a 7-5 lead.

How it Happened
  • Bryant had a chance to take the early lead, putting the first two runners on in the bottom of the second, but could not score.
  • UMBC used the momentum to take the lead with three runs in the top of the third. A pair of soft singles put runners on the corners with two outs and Danny Wyatt drove in a run with a single and Ehi Okojie doubled off the left center wall to plate two more.
  • Bryant was able to answer with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Cam Papetti's fly ball to left fell out of the glove of the left fielder for a leadoff single and Wensley hit a ground-rule double to put runners on second and third. Ellis Garcia delivered an RBI single and Gavin Greger picked up a sac fly to make it 3-2.
  • The Black and Gold were able to tie the game on a UMBC error in the fifth. Papetti opened the inning with a single, advanced on a sac bunt and then scored as Wensley's ground ball went under the glove of the second baseman and into right field.
  • UMBC was on the hunt in the top of the sixth, loading the bases with three-straight one-out singles. Davis, however, bore down and struck out the next two batters to escape the jam.
  • Bryant took its first lead of the weekend in the seventh as it took advantage of UMBC miscues. Irizarry walked on four pitches against reliever Kailen Hackmann and then went to third as the pickoff attempt by the catcher sailed into right field. Garcia would bring him home with a sac fly to center. The Bulldogs had a chance for more but Hackmann got a pop up and a ground ball to strand runners on second and third.
  • The Black and Gold added a run in the eighth as Hackett worked a walk, advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt, to third on a ground out and scored on a Papetti sac fly.
  • UMBC was able to rally to take the lead with four runs in the top of the ninth. Jesiah Carpent.er singled to right center with one out and Dylan Melton then hit a foul chop that took an abrupt left turn and rolled fair for an infield single. A HBP loaded the bases but Dressler was able to get a strikeout for the second out. Okojie, however, hit the first pitch back through the middle to tie the game. Danny Orr Derek Paris followed with singles to give UMBC a 7-5 lead.
  • Bryant would put the tying runs on base for the second straight day Brady Fox induced a ground out to earn his second save of the series.
