BRYANT RALLIES TO WIN ON MOTHER'S DAY ON CARLOS IRIZARRY WALK OFF

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Carlos Irizarry delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth as the Bryant baseball team rallied to defeat UMBC, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at Conaty Park.

With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 26-22 overall and finish 13-11 in America East play. The Bulldogs avoided being swept at home for the first time in program history with the win. Bryant closes out its home schedule on Tuesday when Stonehill comes to town for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch.

Bryant built a 2-0 lead through six innings but the Retrievers took advantage of three walks to score three times. After a bases-loaded walk plated the first run, Dylan Melton singled through the middle to score two and give UMBC a 3-2 lead.

It remained 3-2 until the ninth when the Bulldogs rallied off three UMBC pitchers. Charlie Saul opened the inning with an infield single, while Hunter Kingsbury (HBP) and Cam Papetti (BB) reached vs Brady Fox to load the bases. Jacob Gaudreau was then hit by 1-1 pitch to tie the game. Irizarry drilled a 2-2 pitch to center to win the game for the Bulldogs.

Key Moment

How it Happened
  • UMBC looked to get it going early after a leadoff walk but Cole Schiff retired the next three batters on ground balls.
  • An inspired effort from Irizarry helped Bryant take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. He lined a hit to left and hustled into second for a double, knocking the ball loose with his slide. A fly ball to center moved him to third and a Justin Hackett ground out scored him.
  • The Bulldogs extended their lead with a two-out rally in the fourth. Saul doubled down the left field line with two outs and Hunter Kingsbury followed with a ground ball to the right of the second baseman. Kingsbury raced down the line and beat throw while Saul came around third and scored on the backend.
  • UMBC rallied to score three times in a decisive seventh. After the first batter was retired, Danny Orr's slow chopper in front of the mount resulted in an infield single. Two walks loaded the bases before Thomas Galusha got a strikeout for the second out. A four-pitch walk to Jesiah Carpenter brought in the first run and Melton slipped an 0-1 pitch through the middle to plate two and give UMBC a 3-2 lead.
  • In the ninth, Saul's hard ground ball bounced away at third for a leadoff single. UMBC brought in Brady Fox who had closed out Friday and Saturday's victories for the Retrievers. Fox, however, hit Kingsbury and then walked Papetti on four pitches. Brady LeJeune-DeAcutis then came on to pitch but hit Gaudreau with a 1-1 pitch to tie the game. Irizarry followed and lifted a deep fly ball to center that fell for a walk-off single.
