BULLDOGS SUFFER DIFFICULT 4-2 DEFEAT TO UMBC ON FRIDAY

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant baseball team picked up 16 hits but left 13 men on base on its way suffering a 4-2 loss to UMBC on Friday afternoon at Conaty Park.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 25-21 overall and 12-10 in America East play. The Bulldogs are now in fourth place in the league standings, two games behind UMBC in the loss column. Game two between Bryant and UMBC is tentatively scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.

On Friday, Bryant produced 16 hits but a pair of pickoffs and a crucial 5-2-3 double play helped the Retrievers escape. Brady LeJeune-DeAcutis entered with the bases-loaded and no outs and UMBC ahead 3-2 and proceeded to induce a 5-2-3 double play and a pop up to escape trouble. In the ninth, Brady Fox struck out back-to-back batters with the tying runs on second and third to end the game.

How it Happened
  • UMBC opened the scoring on Friday, plating two runs in the top of the first. Dylan Melton opened the game with a flare down the left field line that fell for a double. He would come around to score the first run on a ground out. Ehi Okojie restarted the inning with a single to right and scored from first on a two-out double to right center from Danny Orr.
  • Bryant took advantage of a UMBC error to get a run back in the bottom of the first. Ellis Garcia reached on a two-out error and raced around to score as Greger followed with a triple into the right field corner.
  • The Bulldogs were able to tie the game in the second. Hunter Kingsbury and Justin Hackett opened the inning with singles and a pair of fielder's choices plated Kingsbury. Cam Papetti brought in the run as he hustled to beat out a potential inning-ending double play.
  • UMBC retook the lead in the fourth as a ground-rule double put runners on second and third and Brooks Henderson sprayed an RBI single just over the head of a leaping Wensley at first. Bryant escaped further trouble as Hackett turned an inning-ending 6-3 double play.
  • The Black and Gold looked primed to take the lead in the sixth as they loaded the bases with no outs. LeJeune-DeAcutis entered and induced a 5-2-3 double play before getting an infield pop up to escape unscathed.
  • UMBC added an insurance run in the eighth as Danny Wyatt singled to center to drive in a run.
  • Bryant put the tying runs on second and third with one out in the ninth but Fox was summoned from the bullpen and struck out the next two batters to end the game.
