BULLDOGS DROP AMERICA EAST OPENER TO BINGHAMTON, 4-3 IN 10

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Back-to-back doubles in the top of the tenth brought home the decisive run as Binghamton defeated the Bryant baseball team, 4-3, in the first of regular season meetings between two preseason heavyweights on Friday at Conaty Park.
 
With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 6-8 overall and 0-1 in America East play on the year. Bryant and Binghamton meet in game two of the weekend series on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
 
Tied in the top of the tenth, Steve Kraus and pinch-hitter Sean Sweeney hit back-to-back doubles to give the Bearcats a 4-3 lead. Jackson Mitchell, the third Binghamton reliever, retired Bryant in order in the bottom of the inning to close it out.
 
Bryant received multiple hits from Gavin Greger and Justin Hackett, while four pitchers combined to strikeout 15 batters on the afternoon.

Key Moment
  • Binghamton pitched out of a bases-loaded one-out jam to keep the game tied at 3-3 in the eighth.
How it Happened
  • Bryant had the game's first scoring chance in the second as Greger singled, stole second and moved to third with one out. Conner Griffin, however, got a strikeout and a soft fly out strand him.
  • Binghamton responded by plating two runs in the top of the third. Tim Henning put the Bearcats on top as he laced a first-pitch fastball over the right field wall. A HBP and a walk followed to put two on and the Bearcats scored a second run as a throwing error on a wild pitch allowed a run to score.
  • Bryant answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the third. Hackett led off with a single, stole second and then scored as Charlie Saul snuck a two-out single through the right side.
  • Saul kept Bryant within a run in the fourth as he raced back and made a leaping catch to take away a home run.
  • Bryant then tied the game with good offensive execution in the fourth. Greger singled, advanced to second on a walk, to third on a fly out and scored on a Hunter Kingsbury ground out.
  • The Black and Gold took the lead with a manufactured run in the fifth. Casey Wensley walked, advanced to second on an HBP and then appeared to be picked off at second but beat the throw to third. Ellis Garcia followed with a sac fly to center to make it 3-2.
  • Binghamton rallied to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh. A leadoff walk, stolen base and a single up the middle tied the game at 3-3. The Bearcats then put runners on second and third with one out but Zaslaw got a big strikeout for the second out. Birchard entered the game and walked the first batter before getting a fly out to center to end the rally.
  • Bryant had a chance to quickly retake the lead as Hackett opened the bottom of the seventh with a double and moved to third on a sac bunt. Dally, however, got a ground out to the draw-in infield and a fly out to strand the runner.
  • Binghamton had a chance to take the lead in the eighth as it loaded the bases with two outs. Birchard left them loaded as he struck out the batter on a 3-2 pitch.
  • Bryant then loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth but Dally get a strikeout and a ground out to end the rally.
  • In extras, Binghamton took a 4-3 lead with back-to-back doubles from Kraus and pinch hitter Sean Sweeney. The Bearcats then had a runner on third with no out but Schiff limited the damage by retiring the next three hitters.
  • Mitchell retired the side in order in the bottom half to close it out.
