BULLDOGS FALL TO UML ON THURSDAY NIGHT

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Aaron Davis III scored a career-high 21 points but UMass Lowell was able to defeat the Bryant men's basketball team, 77-63, on Thursday night at the Chace Athletic Center.
 
With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 5-11 overall and 1-1 in league play. Bryant returns to the court on Saturday when it visits UAlbany for a 2:00 p.m. tip.
 
On Thursday, UMass Lowell used a pair of baskets in the final 30 seconds of the first half to grab momentum at the break and then pulled away with a 17-3 lead midway through the second half. Angel Montas Jr. led UML with 27 points and 60 of the River Hawks points came from the paint (48) and the line (12).
 
Davis led Bryant with 21 points on 5-of-10 shooting from three. Timofei Rudovskii added 15 points, five rebounds and two blocks, while Ashley Sims II collected 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Key Moments
  • Two baskets late in the first half made it a seven-point game at the break but a 17-3 run opened the game up for the River Hawks in the second half.
How it Happened
  • A transition layup from Davis tied things at 4-4 early on but the River Hawks responded with the next eight points to take a 12-4 and force a Bryant timeout with 14:31 left in the opening half.
  • Bryant began to chip away thanks to a tip in from Allen and catch-and-shoot three from Rudovskii.
  • Trailing 18-13, the Bulldogs rattled off the next eight points to take a 21-18 lead. Rudovskii started the run with a pullup from 15 feet and followed with a three from the left wing to tie it. Davis then gave Bryant the lead (21-18) as his three-point attempt bounced high up off the rim before falling through at the 7:48 mark.
  • Bryant would take a 23-22 lead to the under-4 media but the River Hawks scored six quick points to take a 28-23 lead with 2:41 left.
  • The Bulldogs would make it a three-point game with just over a minute left but back-to-back baskets from Angel Montas Jr., including one to beat the half buzzer, gave the River Hawks a 34-27 lead at the break.
  • UML came out of the break hitting 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, building a nine-point edge, 44-35.
  • Bryant pushed back before the under-16, chipping the deficit to five as Davis finished off the glass with a driving layup and Harvey cleaned up a miss at the rim.
  • The Bulldogs would trim the deficit to three, 44-47, as Davis curled around a high screen and drilled a three to beat the shot clock buzzer.
  • UML would answer with an 11-3 run to take a 60-49 lead with 10:01 left in the game.
  • The run would extend to 17-3, giving the River Hawks a 17-point lead, 66-49, lead with 8:01 left.
  • Bryant would get the deficit back to 11 but a Yepdo three gave UML a 71-55 lead with 4:00 left.
  • UML would keep the lead in double figures for the remainder of the contest.

  • Bryant finished the game 24-of-59 (40.7 percent) from the field, 9-of-27 (33.3 percent) from three and 6-of-9 (66.7 percent) from the line.
  • The River Hawks held a 38-27 edge on the glass and a 48-24 edge on paint scoring.
  • UML also led 20-2 in fast break scoring.
  • Bryant posted 18 assists and committed just nine turnovers in the game.
  • Davis led Bryant with 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting. He was 5-of-10 from three.

  • Bryant is now 76-25 overall and 44-15 in league play at home since the start of the 18-19 season. Seven of Bryant's 13 home losses since 20-21 have come against UMass Lowell, UVM and Brown.
  • Sims finished in double figures for the sixth time this season.
  • Davis finished with a career high 21 points in the game. He now has 20+ points in two of his last three games.
  • Davis is now 23-of-46 from three and averaging 14.6 ppg over his last six games (all starts).
