Volleyball splits day two of the Ocean State Cup

SMITHFIELD, R.I.– The Bryant women's volleyball team split the second day of the 2024 Highbar Ocean State Cup. The first game of the day saw Bryant fall to Brown in three sets. The Bulldogs would bounce back in the nightcap however with a four set victory against the Providence Friars. Carrina Barron and Carolina Camacho earned All-Tournament team honors and Aubrey LaPour won the MVP.

HOW IT HAPPENED (VS BROWN) 
  • Set 1-The Bulldogs and Bears opened the match going back and forth, constantly exchanging leads throughout the set. In the middle of the set, Bryant would get a boost off the bench by way of Ana Fuertes-Brito. The junior opposite hitter would record 3 kills for Bryant and help keep them within-in reach. However, the Bears would find a way to capitalize on the Bulldogs' mistakes down the stretch and win the first set by a score of 25-22.
  • Set 2- The second set would play similar to the first, as both sides played incredibly close. That all would change when Brown would go on an 11-4 run and have Bryant on the ropes. Facing adversity, Bryant would not back down as they would try to battle back, however Brown would hold on and win the second set 25-19. LaPour had yet another dominant performance for Bryant in the set as she would log 6 kills.
  • Set 3- Facing a 2-0 deficit, the Bulldogs would not go quietly. LaPour, Fuertes-Brito, and Abdat all stepped up with key plays to keep Bryant alive. Down 23-18 the Black and Gold would rally back and narrow the deficit to one. Unfortunately in the end, Brown held strong and got the victory by a score of 25-23 to complete the sweep.

  • Ricevuto picks up the first blocks of her collegiate career. She also had a kill against the Bears.
  • Claudia Camacho-Castro has recorded a service ace in both of her first two appearances at the Chace.

HOW IT HAPPENED (VS PROVIDENCE) 
  • Set 1-The Bulldogs and Friars had a close battle throughout the first set and would continuously exchange leads. With the score tied late, Bryant would go on a rally that would eventually help them win the set 25-21. Aubrey LaPour and Arianna Ugolini would combine for 10 kills in the set and help power Bryant to a 1-0 advantage..
  • Set 2- PC would respond in the second and get out to a four-point advantage halfway through the set. As Providence took control of the set, the Friars would come out on top by a score of 25-18. Fabi Castro would tally 4 kills in the set for the Bulldogs.
  • Set 3- Set 3 saw Bryant and Brown remain close again, however, the Bulldogs would find a way to pull away late in part thanks to 5 kills a piece by Castro and LaPour. Carolina Camacho would assist LaPour on a kill for the final point of the set, giving Bryant the 25-23 victory.
  • Set 4-Leading two sets to one, the Bulldogs would come out of the gates hot in the fourth set. As the match drew to a close, Bryant would hold a 20-11 lead. However, the Friars would not go quietly as they would muster a few last points. In the end though, the Bulldogs would hold on to win 25-17. Arianna Ugolini would finish with 7 kills in the set. Carrina Barron would also land 2 aces.
STATS
  • Aubrey LaPour and Arianna Ugolini were dynamic once again as they led the Black and Gold with 16 kills each.
  • LaPour also had a dominant evening in the defensive department as she would lead the Bulldogs with 4 blocks.
  • Carrina Barron recorded 23 digs and landed four service aces in a masterful performance at libero.
  • Fabi Castro had a phenomenal match for Bryant as she would record 13 kills, 9 digs, and 3 aces.
  • Carolina Camacho excelled at facilitating the Bulldog offense as she would log 24 assists. Madison Koeller also had a nice performance with 14 assists of her own.
MATCH NOTES
  • Bryant picks up their first win against the Friars since 2019.
  • The Bulldogs saw two of its players earn All-Tournament Team honors (Barron and Camacho) as well as the MVP (LaPour).
UP NEXT:
Bryant heads back on the road and will make the short trip up to Worcester, Massachusetts where they will face the Holy Cross Crusaders. First serve is set for 7:00 PM.
