Bulldogs sweep Stonehill in 2024 home opener

SMITHFIELD, R.I.– The Bryant women's volleyball team came away with a win in their first home match of the season on Wednesday at the Chace Athletic Center. Arianna Ugolini would tally 15 kills and help put head coach Theresa Garlacy one win away from the 600th of her career.

COACH GARLACY'S COMMENTS 
"What great energy in the Chace to open our season. So excited to see Fabi playing like the veteran she is.  We placed a lot of service pressure on Stonehill and it paid off.  We were able to get into our offensive flow as a result of consistent passing.  Getting ready for the weekend."
HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Set 1- After going back and forth early in the first, Bryant would build a strong lead thanks to an offensive showcase by Arianna Ugolini, Aubrey Lapour, and Brookelyn Talmadge. The trio would tally 11 kills for the Black and Gold and lead them to a dominant 25-10 set victory.
  • Set 2- The Skyhawks would rally back in the second set and would be tied at 14 all. However, a 9-0 run would help propel Bryant to a 25-17 victory. Arianna Ugolini led Bryant with 3 kills in the sets. London Hunt would pick up 2 block and 3 kills as well in the second.
  • Set 3-The final set of the match saw the Bulldogs continue their dominance by getting out to an early 5-2 lead. Stonehill proved unable to get things going and ultimately Bryant would win the final set by a score of 25-15. Fabi Castro and Arianna Ugolini combined for 10 kills. Nadine Abdat and Aubrey LaPour would also each have 3 blocks a piece in the set.
STATS
  • Arianna Ugolini led the Black and Gold's offense with 15 kills and hit .565 in the match.
  • The Bulldogs had 14 blocks in 3 sets vs the Skyhawks. Aubrey LaPour led the defense with 4 rejections.
  • Carolina Camacho and Melis Isik combined for 34 assists for Bryant. Camacho led the team with 19.
  • Carrina Barron led the Bulldogs in digs with 11.
MATCH NOTES
  • Fabi Castro appeared in her first home match for Bryant since November 13th, 2022 (vs. Binghamton). Castro finished tonight's match with 8 kills, 10 digs, and a service ace.
  • Tonight's win marked No. 599 in the coaching career of Theresa Garlacy. She will attempt to earn her 600th on Friday vs. the University of Rhode Island.

Bryant will welcome in the University of Rhode Island, Brown University, and Providence College to Smithfield this weekend for the Ocean State Cup Volleyball Tournament.
