Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball sweeps Hofstra and Army to win the Black Knight Invitational

WEST POINT, N.Y.– The Bryant women's volleyball team won both of their games on Day 2 of the Black Knights Invitational on Saturday. The Bulldogs first would defeat the Hofstra Pride in straight sets to open the day. The Black and Gold would then sweep Army to cap off the weekend and leave as tournament champions. Arianna Ugolini would earn tournament MVP honors. Aubrey LaPour and Carolina Camacho were also named to the All-Tournament team.
GAME INFORMATION
Bryant, Hofstra (25-19, 25-20, 25-20)
Records: Bryant (8-2, 0-0) Hofstra (3-5, 0-0)
Location: Gillis Field House
COACH GARLACY'S COMMENTS (VS HOFSTRA)
"Our defense both on the floor as well as blocking gave us a great advantage in this match. Our off blockers put the ball up high and allowed the setters to run our tempo offense.  Both setters moved the ball around to provide a very balanced attack.  Aubrey stepped up in the back row and passed consistently. We are operating as a cohesive unit."
HOW IT HAPPENED (VS HOFSTRA)
  • Set 1- After exchanging leads throughout the first set, Bryant would be able to pull ahead thanks to late kills from Arianna Ugolini, Aubrey LaPour and Brookelyn Talmadge. The Bulldogs would go up by a set with a 25-19 victory. Ugolini and LaPour combined for seven kills in the first. They would also each have a block assist.
  • Set 2- Bryant would continue their dominance into the second set as they would overcome an early run by the Pride and break out to a 14-10 lead half way through the set. Although Hofstra would try to battle back, the Bulldogs always seemed to stay a step ahead. Bryant would win the second set 25-20 and go up 2-0. Ana Fuertes-Brito would have a tremendous presence off the bench for Bryant landing four kills while also picking up two assists in the set.
  • Set 3- Facing elimination, Hofstra would make the third set the most challenging of Bryant's day. The Pride at one point held an 11-7 lead and looked to be pulling away. That was until the Bulldogs, in part thanks to LaPour and Ugolini, would fight back and tie the score at 12 all. The two sides would then exchange blows once again, with Bryant eventually pulling away in the end. The Black and Gold would win 25-22 to complete the sweep. LaPour and Ugolini would combine for another eight kills and London Hunt would pick up a pair of blocks.
STATS
  • Aubrey LaPour led the way for Bryant's offense today with 13 kills. Arianna Ugolini also had double digit kills on the day; finishing with 10.
  • London Hunt was dominant on the defensive end yet again for the Black and Gold. She would finish today's match with a team leading five blocks.

COACH GARLACY'S COMMENTS (VS ARMY)
"We stayed dialed in and focused right to finish this match and go undefeated in the tournament. Even when we fell behind we never lost belief that we would prevail.  Aubrey played all the way around for the first time in her career this weekend and did such a great job. All three of our setters saw time and distributed the ball evenly putting their hitters in a good position to score.  We continued to amp up our serving game with good results. So proud of how this team supports each other!"
HOW IT HAPPENED (VS ARMY)
  • Set 1- Army would put the pressure on Bryant early, getting out to a 6-2 lead and looking in control. However, the Bulldogs would not waver as they would manage to knot things up at 13 all. Bryant and Army would then go back and forth eventually leading Bryant to what appeared to be their first set point of the day. That would change as a successful challenge by Army ruled that the two sides must replay their rally giving the Black Knights the opportunity to take a 24-23 lead. Despite being up against the ropes Bryant would not back down as London Hunt and Aubrey LaPour would help the Black and Gold comeback and win the set, 26-24. Arianna Ugolini had seven kills in the first and London Hunt would have a pair of blocks.
  • Set 2- The next set played nearly identical to the first as Army got out to an early advantage; leading Bryant 8-4. The Bulldogs would slowly start to chip away and would knot things up at 15 a piece. The second set would end with the same score as the first; 26-24 in favor of the Bulldogs. Ugolini would tack on another five kills and a block in the set and put the Bulldogs up 2 sets to 0.
  • Set 3- Having the chance to go for the sweep, Bryant would go toe to toe with  the Army and find a late surge to put them ahead. With the score tied at 18 all, The Black and Gold would go on a 7-1 run thanks to kills from Nina Gavin and aces by Arianna Ugolini. The Bulldogs would win the third set 25-19 and complete the sweep. Gavin would finish with four kills in the third set. LaPour and Ugolini would each have multiple service aces.
STATS
  • Arianna Ugolini led the way for Bryant with 14 kills against Army.
  • Aubrey LaPour led the defense with three blocks on the day; she also had seven kills and three service aces.
  • Carolina Camacho led the team in assists with 15. She also had three aces of her own.
  • Ana Fuertes-Brito had 4.5 points in the match with four kills and a block assist.
  • Carrina Barron led the Black and Gold in digs with 18.
