COACH GARLACY'S COMMENTS
"When this team says we protect home, they mean it. The Big Three of Ari, Aubrey and Fabi did their job and put us in a great position to win the match. In the fifth, Carolina and Madison got the middles the ball to close it out. The setters did a great job digging and Carrina put up some perfect out-of-system sets."
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Set 1- The Bulldogs would get out to a remarkable start against the Retrievers on Sunday; opening the first set with a 13-6 run. UMBC however, would find a way back into the match and manage to extend the set after evening the score at 24-24. After both sides would exchange points, Bryant would be able to put the Retrievers away and win the first set by a score of 27-25. Ana Fuertes-Brito would have a huge impact off the bench for the Bulldogs as she would come away with 4 kills and a block in the opening set. Fabi Castro would finish with 4 kills, 3 digs, and a block.
  • Set 2- The second set was a back and forth battle in which it seemed neither side was giving an inch. After leading for the majority of the set, UMBC would find a way to go up 23-22 and lead Bryant to take their second timeout. Coming out of the break however, the Bulldogs would find their way and go on a 3-0 run to win the second set 25-23. Aubrey Lapour and Arianna Ugolini would combine for 10 kills in the set and Brookelyn Talmadge would post five blocks.
  • Set 3-UMBC would find their footing in the third set and would never trail to Bryant. This performance would ultimately result in a 25-14 set victory for the Retrievers as they would avoid the sweep and force a fourth set. Fabi Castro lead the Black and Gold with 4 kills in the frame.
  • Set 4- Bryant would appear to regain themselves entering the fourth as they would record the first three points of the set. UMBC however would have other plans, as the Retrievers would subsequently build out another lead and manage to keep the Bulldogs out of reach; winning 25-19 and send us to the fifth. This frame would see Aubrey LaPour finish with 4 kills and a block while London Hunt would also come away with 3 kills and a rejection of her own.
  • Set 5- The final set would inevitably come down to the wire as both sides would exchange leads. Bryant would switch sides at the midway point leading 8-6 but UMBC would find a way to take a one point lead. With the match hanging in the balance, the Bulldogs would rally back and come away with the win following a kill from Fabi Castro. Arianna Ugolini would come away with 4 kills in the shortened set for Bryant. Bryant hands UMBC their first conference loss of the season and beats the Retrievers for the first time since 2022.
