Box Score SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Rookie Sophie Hoekstra (Millersville, Md.) posted nine kills in the opening match of the North Charleston Classic Friday, but the No. 23 University of Minnesota was too much for the Bryant University volleyball team in a 3-0 loss.
The Golden Gophers (6-2) were paced by 14 kills from Paige Tapp – who hit an impressive .765 on the match – and 12 more from Daly Santana (.417). Samantha Seliger-Swenson handed out a contest-leading 35 assists for Minnesota, while Dalianliz Rosado paced the outing with 15 digs.
Frosh Kristin Kingi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and sophomore Vika Nesterov (Kfar Saba, Israel) added six kills apiece for the Bulldogs (7-6), while senior Debora Magalhaes (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) picked up 10 digs. Nesterov chipped in 10 assists with eight digs on the contest, while rookie Kirstyn Sperry (Phoenix, Ariz.) distributed 13 helpers.
The Gophers outhit the Bulldogs, .422 to .118, and won the battle at the net, outblocking the Black and Gold, 12-3. Minnesota took the match in straight sets, 25-12, 25-12 and 25-17.
Bryant returns to North Charleston Classic action Saturday, taking on the host Cougars at 1:00 p.m. and Sam Houston State at 4:30 p.m.
