SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's tennis team picked up their third-straight victory and second-consecutive Northeast Conference win knocking off Sacred Heart, 5-2, Friday afternoon at the East Hartford Racquet Club in Fairfield, Conn.
With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 6-6 overall and even more importantly 2-1 against NEC opponents with wins over the Pioneers and Fairleigh Dickinson in the past week.
On Friday, the Black and Gold got off to a strong start and never looked back. Senior Rosie Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) and freshman Ashanti Campfield (Stratford, Conn.) sparked the Bryant with an 8-2 victory over Katie DeRienzo and Nicole Rydewski at No. 2 doubles. At No. 1 doubles, sophomores Ryan Brown (Austin, Texas) and Marion Bouillin (San Diego, Calif.) fought off Paige Olson and Lindsey post for an 8-6 victory, and freshman Linnea Sjoberg (Stockholms län, Sweeden) and sophomore Briana Leonard (Westford, Mass.) completed the doubles sweep with a narrow 8-7 win over Taylor Gurda and Sabrina Navarro at the No. 3 spot.
Singles action brought more Bulldog success with Bouillin improving to 2-0 on the day with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Olson to her fourth-straight win at No. 2 singles. Leonard, Campfield, and Bird all made quick work of their opponents as well, winning in straight sets at No. 4, 5, and 6 singles, respectively.
With NEC play in the books, Bryant will wrap up regular season play this week with a pair of home matches, first hosting URI on Tuesday (3 p.m.) before welcoming UMass to the Bryant Tennis Courts on Saturday (11 a.m.).
