Ware's career high leads Bulldogs to fourth-straight win, 70-54, at CCSU

Box Score

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Freshman guard Hunter Ware (Powder Springs, Ga.) scored a career-high and game-best 20 points while sophomore forward Dan Garvin (Bethel, Conn.) picked up his second double-double in the last three games as the Bryant University men's basketball team extended its win streak to four with a 70-54 victory at Detrick Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

Ware's career-best mark came on 8-of-11 shooting, and the rookie was one of three Bulldogs (8-7, 5-1 Northeast Conference) to finish in double figures in the victory. Senior guard Dyami Starks (Duluth, Minn.) added 16, while Garvin went 7-of-8 from the floor for 15 points, also pulling in a game-best 11 rebounds.

Faronte Drakeford led the Blue Devils (2-17, 0-6) with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting (5-7 FT) as Bryant limited the league's leading scorer in Matt Mobley to just nine points on a 4-of-10 mark from the floor. The Bulldogs shot a blazing 65.2 percent from the field in the second half for 54 percent accuracy on the afternoon. Bryant also won the battle on the glass, 28-23.

It was a slow start for both sides, with neither team entering double-digit points until a long two from Starks gave Bryant an 11-8 edge with 7:58 to play in the opening stanza.

Neither team would lead by more than four points in the half, and the first 3-pointer of the day wouldn't come until the 4:48 mark when Mobley drained one from the corner to give Central Connecticut an 18-16 advantage.

Brandon Peel (8 points) gave the hosts a four-point, 24-20 advantage as the clock ticked under three to go, but Ware would get a steal to spring a breakaway layup a minute later and followed that up with Bryant's first trey for a 25-24 edge with 1:21 on the clock. A triple from Starks finished off first-half scoring as the Black and Gold took a 28-27 lead into halftime.

Bryant scored the first nine points of the second half to take a 37-27 lead three minutes in and continued its hot shooting through the 10-minute mark, using 9-of-12 accuracy from the floor to build up a 51-38 advantage.

With seven minutes still to play, senior guard Joe O'Shea (Burlington, Vt.) (9 points, 7 rebounds) would head to the bench after picking up his fourth foul of the game, but the loss wouldn't affect the Bulldogs, who held CCSU to 5-of-12 shooting for the remainder of the half.

Bryant went 6-for-6 from the line in the final five minutes of the game to cap off the 70-54 victory.

On the day, CCSU shot 46.7 percent from the floor and 26.7 percent from long range while making 8-of-13 free throws. Bryant went 11-of-15 from the line and 5-of-20 from 3-point land.

The Bulldogs will now return home to take a short break from NEC action, hosting a non-conference tilt against regional foe Harvard on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Chace Athletic Center. The contest can be seen live on NECFrontRow.com and heard on WOON 1240AM.
