Bulldogs Mount comeback but fall short 84-79 at Mount St. Mary's

Box Score

EMMITSBURG, MD. – Despite a 30-point outburst from senior point guard Jenniqua Bailey (Bloomfield, Conn.), the Bryant University women's basketball team fell just short of a dramatic comeback, 84-79, in overtime Saturday afternoon at Knott Arena.

The Bulldogs (10-8, 5-2 Northeast Conference) drop just their second contest in 11 games while the Mountaineers (9-10, 4-3 NEC) continued their strong play at home.

In overtime, Mount held a 79-77 lead with 1:24 left on the clock until a Bailey floater tied the score again with less than a minute to play. After sloppy possessions from both teams, a pair Jacqueline Brewer free throws granted The Mount a two-point lead.

The Bulldogs had shots in their final few touches but could not convert as the Mountaineers hung out to earn the 84-79 victory.

Bailey led all scorers with 30 points (20 in the second half), seven rebounds, four assists and five steals, while Breanna Rucker (Cincinnati, Ohio) put up yet another double-double effort with 18 points and 13 rebounds in a career-high 41 minutes. Forward Meredith Soper (Winthrop, Mass.) added 17 points and a game-high six steals while senior guard Courtney Schissler (Branford, Conn.) finished with six points, five rebounds and five helpers.

Bailey's 30-point performance is just the second 30+ point game from a Bulldog since the 2008-09 season (Schissler put up 36 at Saint Francis U. earlier this month).

Brewer paced The Mount with 27 points (6-of-9 from deep) and five assists while Sydney Henderson poured in 21 points to lead five double-digit scorers.

As a team, the Mountaineers shot 15-of-29 (.517) from behind the arc and dished out 21 assists compared to Bryants 4-of-16 3-point shooting and 11 helpers.

The Bulldogs struggled to make shots in the latter part of the first half, going on a six-plus minute scoring drought and Mount took advantage opening up a 33-22 lead. Bryant attempted to chip away at the host's lead but sharp shooting from Brewer and Henderson kept the Mountaineer's lead a comfortable 10 points, 43-33, at halftime.

Bailey and Soper led the Black and Gold with 10 points apiece at the break, while Henderson (16) and Brewer (15) combined for 31 of Mount's 43 first-half points.

The Mount wasted little time coming out of the locker room opening the second half on a 12-4 run behind nine quick points from Mathews.

Over the next five minutes, the Bulldogs began to chip away at the Mount St. Mary's lead thanks to some stellar play in the post from Rucker, cutting the deficit to just 12 points, 59-47, with 11:47 left to play.

Bryant went on to open a 14-0 run to cut the Mount lead to just four points, 59-55, with just under 10 minutes to play in the contest. The two teams continued to trade baskets, but The Mount remained in control of the lead until a Maureen Leahy (Springfield, Pa.) put back granted Bryant the brief, 68-67 lead.

Tied, 70-70, with 1:46 remaining on the clock, a Brewer trifecta granted Mount a three-point lead until Soper answered right back with a long ball of her own to knot the score once again. After a sloppy final minute, the two teams stood tied, 73-73, at the end of regulation.

In extra time, the Black and Gold were unable to take advantage of second-chance opportunities while timely shooting by Mount St. Mary's secured the 84-79 victory.

Bryant will look to split its weekend road trip with a tough test Monday night (7 p.m.) at Sacred Heart.
